Susceptibility of polar cod (Boreogadus saida) to a model carcinogen

چکیده

Studies that aim to characterise the susceptibility of ecologically relevant and non-model fish polar cod (Boreogadus saida) model carcinogens are required. Polar were exposed under laboratory conditions for six months control, 0.03 μg BaP/g fish/week 0.3 dietary benzo(a)pyrene (BaP), a reference carcinogen. The concentrations 3-OH-BaP bile metabolite transcriptional responses genes involved in DNA adduct recognition (xpc), helicase activity (xpd), repair (xpf, rad51) tumour suppression (tp53) assessed after 0, 1, 3 6 exposure, alongside body condition indexes (gonadosomatic index, hepatosomatic index factor). Micronuclei nuclear abnormalities blood spleen, liver histopathological endpoints at end experiment. Fish grew steadily over whole experiment no mortality was recorded. increased significantly 1 month exposure highest BaP concentration all showing biotransformation mother compound. Nevertheless, significant induction gene transcripts damage or observed selected sampling times. These results together with absence chromosomal spleen cells, subtle increase cells low occurrence foci cellular alteration suggested below threshold observable effects. Taken together, showed not susceptible carcinogenesis using regime employed herein.

Laboratory rearing of wild Arctic cod Boreogadus saida from egg to adulthood.

The techniques and protocols used to successfully capture, transport and breed Arctic cod Boreogadus saida, as well as to rear their larvae through to adulthood are summarized. Breeding B. saida will increase the opportunity to study this fish species, which is a critical part of the Arctic food web.

Acclimation potential of Arctic cod (Boreogadus saida) from the rapidly warming Arctic Ocean.

As a consequence of the growing concern about warming of the Arctic Ocean, this study quantified the thermal acclimation responses of Boreogadus saida, a key Arctic food web fish. Physiological rates for cardio-respiratory functions as well as critical maximum temperature (Tc,max) for loss of equilibrium (LOE) were measured. The transition temperatures for these events (LOE, the rate of oxygen ...

Summer foraging behaviour of shallow-diving seabirds and distribution of their prey, Arctic cod (Boreogadus saida), in the Canadian Arctic

Productive areas in the Canadian Arctic seasonally provide top predators with accessible and often predictable sources of energy. Arctic cod (Boreogadus saida) aggregate in shallow bays during the summer and are exploited by seabirds and marine mammals. Information concerning how prey is presented to predatory seabirds, and the cues seabirds use to optimize foraging potential, is limited. Hydro...

Upper thermal limits of cardiac function for Arctic cod Boreogadus saida, a key food web fish species in the Arctic Ocean.

The objective of this study was to determine the upper thermal limits of Arctic cod Boreogadus saida by measuring the response of maximum heart rate (f(Hmax)) to acute warming. One set of fish were tested in a field laboratory in Cambridge Bay (CB), Nunavut (north of the Arctic Circle), and a second set were tested after air transport to and 6 month temperature acclimation at the Vancouver Aqua...

Gender Specific Reproductive Strategies of an Arctic Key Species (Boreogadus saida) and Implications of Climate Change

The Arctic climate is changing at an unprecedented rate. What consequences this may have on the Arctic marine ecosystem depends to a large degree on how its species will respond both directly to elevated temperatures and more indirectly through ecological interactions. But despite an alarming recent warming of the Arctic with accompanying sea ice loss, reports evaluating ecological impacts of c...
