Surface enhanced bacterial fluorescence and enumeration of bacterial adhesion.
The use of flow displacement systems for studying initial bacterial adhesion to surfaces is mostly confined to transparent substrata. The objective of this study was to investigate a method based on macroscopic fluorescence imaging to enumerate adhering fluorescent bacteria on non-transparent substrata, real-time and under flow. To this end, a stepwise protocol is described to quantify adhesion...
متن کاملWeak rolling adhesion enhances bacterial surface colonization.
Bacterial adhesion to and subsequent colonization of surfaces are the first steps toward forming biofilms, which are a major concern for implanted medical devices and in many diseases. It has generally been assumed that strong irreversible adhesion is a necessary step for biofilm formation. However, some bacteria, such as Escherichia coli when binding to mannosylated surfaces via the adhesive p...
متن کاملThermodynamics of Surface Phenomena
The thermodynamic treatment of the interfacial region corresponding to two fluid phases in contact is discussed. The features of this analysis which are reviewed include the classical treatment of Gibbs and the extensions to this treatment which are due to Buff. It is shown that these extensions are essential if the logical structure of the analysis is to be regarded as complete.
متن کاملBacterial adhesion to surface hydrophilic and hydrophobic contact lenses.
The aim of this paper was to determine the adhesion of two physico-chemically characterized bacterial strains to a surface hydrophilic (CL A, water contact angle 57 degrees) and hydrophobic (CL B, water contact angle 106 degrees) hydrogel contact lens (CL) with and without an adsorbed tear film in a parallel plate flow chamber. Hydrophobicity (by water contact angles), charge (by particulate mi...
متن کاملExtracellular polymeric substances responsible for bacterial adhesion onto solid surface.
The influence of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) on bacterial cell adhesion onto solid surfaces was investigated using 27 heterotrophic bacterial strains isolated from a wastewater treatment reactor. Cell adhesion onto glass beads was carried out by the packed-bed method and the results were discussed in terms of the amount of each EPS component produced and cell surface characteristic...
