Analysis of Surface Crack Growth under Rolling Contact Fatigue
Understanding the fatigue crack growth phenomenon in railheads requires a study of driving forces such as the crack tip opening and sliding displacements, under repeated rolling contact. Finite element simulations, allowing elastic-plastic deformation, and mixed-mode crack growth laws were utilized to demonstrate that the fatigue crack growth rates display a minimum after a finite amount of cra...
متن کاملRolling contact fatigue of surface coatings—a review
The aim of this review is to survey the state of the art relating to the rolling contact fatigue (RCF) investigation of various overlay coatings and also, to ascertain the influence of design parameters such as the type of deposition process, coating material and thickness on the RCF performance. Rolling contact fatigue is a significant factor in the failure of components in rolling/sliding con...
متن کاملThermal Desorption Analysis of Hydrogen in Non‐hydrogen‐Charged Rolling Contact Fatigue‐Tested 100Cr6 Steel
Hydrogen diffusion during rolling contact fatigue (RCF) is considered a potential root cause or accelerator of white etching cracks (WECs) in wind turbine gearbox bearing steels. Hydrogen entry into the bearing steel during operation is thought to occur either through the contact surface itself or through cracks that breach the contact surface, in both cases by the decomposition of lubricant th...

متن کاملBending Fatigue Failures in Valve Steel
In the present paper the effect of defects (viz. pits, gouges and oxide inclusions) will be reported. Although certain defects were uniformly distributed over the specimen surface, the majority of all fractures started in the edge region. An explanation to this behaviour is presented in terms of stress enhancement in the edge regions due to edge deflections.
