Surface-directed spinodal decomposition in binary fluid mixtures.
We consider the phase separation of binary fluids in contact with a surface, which is preferentially wetted by one of the components of the mixture. We review the results available for this problem and present numerical results obtained using a mesoscopic level simulation technique for the three-dimensional problem.
متن کاملSurface-directed spinodal decomposition and enrichment in fluid mixtures: Molecular dynamics simulations Kinetics of fluid mixtures at surfaces
We present results from molecular dynamics simulations for the non-equilibrium evolution of a binary fluid in the presence of a wetting surface. We study the pattern dynamics which results when a homogeneous fluid mixture is quenched to temperatures both above and below the critical temperature. Our extensive computer simulation results are in agreement with arguments based on Ginzburg-Landau t...
متن کاملSpinodal decomposition of chemically reactive binary mixtures.
We simulate the influence of a reversible isomerization reaction on the phase segregation process occurring after spinodal decomposition of a deeply quenched regular binary mixture, restricting attention to systems wherein material transport occurs solely by diffusion. Our theoretical approach follows a diffuse-interface model of partially miscible binary mixtures wherein the coupling between r...
متن کاملPeriodic spinodal decomposition in a binary fluid under shear
2014 Light scattering techniques have been used to study the phase separation of a sheared binary fluid of nitrobenzene and n-hexane at critical composition. Shear was seen to prevent the development of decomposition. The system is quenched when the shear is removed, allowing anisotropic spinodal decomposition rings to appear. When a periodic (frequency 03A9) shear was applied, a permanent anis...
