چکیده
We investigate the relative importance of injection and production on spatial-temporal distribution induced seismicity at Raft River geothermal field. use time-series InSAR measurements to document surface deformation calibrate a hydro-mechanical model estimate effective stress changes imparted by production. Seismicity, located predominantly in basement, is primarily poroelastic stresses from cold water reinjection into shallower reservoir. The effect deeper reservoir minimal inconsistent with observed seismicity, as pore-pressure-diffusion basement along reactivated faults. an initial strength excess ∼20 kPa sedimentary cover, but rate cover four times lower, reflecting lower density seed-points for earthquake nucleation. Our modeling workflow could be used assess impact fluid extraction or help design guide operations.

Fluid Geochemistry at the Raft River Geothermal Field, Idaho: New Data and Hydrogeological Implications
Following a period of exploration and development in the mid-late 1970’s, there was little activity at the Raft River geothermal field for the next ~20 years. US Geothermal Inc. acquired the project in 2002, and began commercial power generation in January 2008. From mid-2004 to present, US Geothermal Inc. has collected geochemical data from geothermal and monitoring wells in the field, as well...
متن کاملInjection-induced seismicity: Poroelastic and earthquake nucleation effects
The standard model of injection-induced seismicity considers changes in Coulomb strength due solely to changes in pore pressure. We consider two additional effects: full poroelastic coupling of stress and pore pressure, and time-dependent earthquake nucleation. We model stress and pore pressure due to specified injection rate in a homogeneous, poroelastic medium. Stress and pore pressure are us...
متن کاملComparison of Three Tracer Tests at the Raft River Geothermal Site
Three conservative tracer tests have been conducted through the Bridge Fault fracture zone at the Raft River Geothermal (RRG) site. All three tests were conducted between injection well RRG-5 and production wells RRG-1 (790 m distance) and RRG4 (740 m distance). The injection well is used during the summer months to provide pressure support to the production wells. The first test was conducted ...
متن کاملGeology and in situ stress of the MH-2 borehole, Idaho, USA: Insights into western Snake River Plain structure from geothermal exploration drilling
Project HOTSPOT, the Snake River Scientific Drilling Project (International Continental Scientific Drilling Program), tested for deep geothermal resources and examined the petrology of volcanic rocks with three drillholes in the central and western Snake River Plain (western USA). The MH-2 drillhole targeted fractured crystalline and hydrothermally altered basalt in the area of the Mountain Hom...
متن کاملStatistical Evaluation of Induced Seismicity at the Karkheh Dam, Iran
Karkheh Dam is the largest dam in Iran with a capacity of about 7.4×109 cubic meters and height of 127 meters. Since the first impoundment, increasing in seismic activity in the dam area has been observed that indicates the possible occurrence of reservoir-induced seismicity (RIS).In the present work, a preliminary evaluation is conducted firstly in order to investigate these observations. Base...
