Supersonic-to-subsonic transition of a radiation wave observed at the LMJ

We detail results of an experiment performed at the Laser Mégajoule facility aimed studying transition from supersonic radiation front to shock in a low density CHOBr foam enclosed plastic tube driven by thermal emission produced laser heated spherical gold cavity. Time resolved 2D hard x-ray radiography imaging using Sc source (photon energy ?4.3 keV) is employed measure perturbation position, absorption, curvature, and shocked material compression (defined as compressed normalized its nominal value) subsonic regimes propagation. Between these two where goes 1 (limited hydrodynamics) 4 (strong formed), quick increase observed time tHS = 6.75 ± 0.75 ns, corresponding transient transonic regime (HS means “hydrodynamically separated” refers instant when physically separate). This associated with ratio ?2 Mach number slowing down below M < 2. Experimental are successfully compared 3D hydrodynamics simulations; comparisons never presented for that similar past studies our knowledge. Simulations show sensitive closure entrance. closure, which occurs 3D, affects amount coupled cavity consequently dynamics.
