Super-massive Black Hole Demography: the Match between the Local and Accreted Mass Functions
We have performed a detailed analysis of the local super-massive black-hole (SMBH) mass function based on both kinematic and photometric data and derived an accurate analytical fit in the range 10 6 MBH/M⊙ 6 5 × 10 . We find a total SMBH mass density of (4.2 ± 1.1)× 105M⊙/Mpc , about 25% of which is contributed by SMBHs residing in bulges of late type galaxies. Exploiting up-to-date luminosity ...
متن کاملA Relation between Supermassive Black Hole Mass and Quasar Metallicity?
We analyze spectra for a large sample of 578 Active Galactic Nuclei to examine the relationships between broad emission line properties and central supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass. We estimate SMBH masses by applying the virial theorem to the C IV λ1549 broad emission line. Although the FWHMs of C IV and Hβ appear nearly unrelated in individual objects, these FWHMs are well correlated when ...
متن کاملCollapse of a Rotating Supermassive Star to a Supermassive Black Hole: Analytic Determination of the Black Hole Mass and Spin
The collapse of a uniformaly rotating, supermassive star (SMS) to a supermassive black hole (SMBH) has been followed recently by means of hydrodynamic simulations in full general relativity. The initial SMS of arbitrary mass M in these simulations rotates uniformly at the mass–shedding limit and is marginally unstable to radial collapse. The final black hole mass and spin have been determined t...
متن کاملThe Correlation Between Supermassive Black Hole Mass and the Structure of Ellipticals and Bulges
We demonstrate a strong correlation between supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass and the global structure of ellipticals and bulges: more centrally concentrated bulges and ellipticals (higher Sérsic index n) host higher-mass black holes. This correlation is as good as that previously found between SMBH mass and central velocity dispersion, with comparable scatter. In addition, by carefully model...
متن کاملThe local supermassive black hole mass density: corrections for dependencies on the Hubble constant
We have investigated past measurements of the local supermassive black hole mass density, correcting for hitherto unknown dependencies on the Hubble constant, which, in some cases, had led to an underestimation of the mass density by factors of ∼2. Correcting for this, we note that the majority of (but not all) past studies yield a local supermassive black hole mass density that is consistent w...
