Super Cooling Point Phenotypes and Cold Resistance in Hyles euphorbiae Hawk Moths from Different Climate Zones

چکیده

The spurge hawkmoth Hyles euphorbiae L. (Sphingidae) comprises a remarkable species complex with still not fully resolved taxonomy. Its extensive natural distribution range covers diverse climatic zones. This predestinates particular populations to cope different local seasonally unfavorable environmental conditions. ability of the pupae overcome outer frosty conditions is well known. However, differences between two main ecotypes (‘euphorbiae’ and ‘tithymali’) in terms inherent degree frost tolerance, its corresponding survival strategy, underlying mechanism have been studied detail so far. aim our study was test phenotypic exhibition (as relevant life cycle stadia outlast conditions) response combined effects exogenous stimuli, such as daylight length cooling regime. Namely, we tested turnout subitan (with fast development, unadapted or diapause (paused adapted external influences increased resistance) under conditions, their mortality, measured super point (SCP) whole (in vivo) pupal hemolymph vitro) indicators cold acclimation. Our results show higher sensitivity ‘tithymali’ populations, exhibiting rather opportunistic short-termed hardiness, while ‘euphorbiae’ produces phenotype seasonal cold-hardy effect short continuous treatment. Further include variability duration mortality pupae. suggests pre-adaptations each ecotype may indicate state incipient speciation within H. complex.

A comprehensive phylogeography of the Hyles euphorbiae complex (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae) indicates a ‘glacial refuge belt’

We test the morphology based hypothesis that the Western Palaearctic spurge hawkmoths represent two species, the Eurasian H. euphorbiae and Afro-Macaronesian H. tithymali. It has been suggested that these species merged into several hybrid swarm populations, although a mitochondrial phylogeography revealed substructure with local differentiation. We analysed a three-gene mt-dataset (889 individ...

Visual feedback influences antennal positioning in flying hawk moths.

Insect antennae serve a variety of sensory functions including tactile sensing, olfaction and flight control. For all of these functions, the precise positioning of the antenna is essential to ensure the proper acquisition of sensory feedback. Although antennal movements in diverse insects may be elicited or influenced by multimodal sensory stimuli, the relative effects of these cues and their ...

Flight energetics in sphinx moths: heat production and heat loss in Hyles lineata during free flight.

1. Mean thoracic temperature of free-flying H. lineata in the field and in the laboratory increased from about 40 degrees C at Ta=16 degrees C to 42-5 degrees C at Ta=32 degrees C. At a given Ta, thoracic temperature was independent of body weight and weakly correlated with wing loading. 2. The difference between abdominal temperature and air temperature increased from 2 degrees C at low Ta to ...

Comparative detection of climate change in two climate zones, very humid - temperate and cold mountainous (Case study: Bandar Anzali and Shahrekord)

Among the important challenges facing water resources of the country, one can mention the phenomenon of climate change and its impacts. The General Circulation Models (GCMs) can provide the best information about the response to increasing the concentration of greenhouse gases. Since the outputs of this model do not have sufficient time and space accuracy for studies on the effects of climate c...
