Stimulated Near-Infrared Light Emission in Graphene
Graphene—a carbon sheet only one atom thick—provides physicists with a playground to explore exotic quantum phenomena, and engineers with a material with which they may be able to miniaturize electronic devices and catch up with Moore’s law [1, 2]. New results reported in Physical Review Letters by Tianqi Li and colleagues at Ames Laboratory and Iowa State University suggest that graphene has a...
متن کاملProton-induced X-ray Emission
Black particles, collected by filtration (1.2~pm pore size) from the anoxic waters of a soft-water lake, were examined by a scanning proton microprobe which permitted quantitative elemental analysis by proton-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) and Rutherford backscattering (RBS). There was a uniform distribution of sulfur across the filter, but Fe, and to a lesser extent, Mn, was localized in -5-pm-...
متن کاملHard X - ray and Infrared Emission from Apparently Single
The photospheric emission of a white dwarf (WD) is not expected to be detectable in hard X-rays or the mid-IR. Hard X-ray (∼1 keV) emission associated with a WD is usually attributed to a binary companion; however, emission at 1 keV has been detected from three WDs without companions: KPD 0005+5106, PG 1159, and WD 2226−210. The origin of their hard X-ray emission is unknown, although it has be...
متن کاملOptical and near-infrared observations of Anomalous X-ray Pulsars
We present recent results of our program of deep optical and infrared observations of AXPs. We find that the counterpart to AXP 4U 0142+61 has a peculiar spectral energy distribution. The counterpart is remarkably bright in the near-infrared, but is not detected in the B band. We also present the possible detection of a second AXP counterpart, namely that to 1E 2259+586.
متن کاملA proton induced X-ray emission (PIXE) analysis of concentration of trace elements in varicose veins
Background: Proton induced X-ray emission (PIXE) has been applied as reliable and improved techniques in this study to compare concentration of various trace elements in normal and abnormal varicose veins. Materials and Methods: Five samples from normal veins and 13 samples from varicose veins bombarded by 2.0 MeV energy proton beams produced by a Van de Graff accelerator in vacuum. T...
