Sun-Protective Behaviors in Patients with Melasma

Melasma is an acquired, chronic hyperpigmentation disorder exacerbated by hormone fluctuations, heat, inflammation, and sun exposure. Sun exposure the greatest triggering exacerbating factor, yet few studies investigate how patients with melasma practice sun-protective behaviors (SPBs). This mixed-methods project explored barriers to SPBs in melasma. The demographic questionnaire Exposure Protection Index (SEPI) survey were completed 21 participants, 13 participants interviewed. Only 5 (23%) reapplied sunscreen every 2 hours as recommended. Interviews revealed a lack of knowledge perceived risk regarding incidental exposures proper use.
