Sulfur Dioxide Transported From the Residual Layer Drives Atmospheric Nucleation During Haze Periods in Beijing

چکیده
New particle formation (NPF) is a global phenomenon that significantly influences climate. NPF also contributes to haze, with pronounced negative impacts on human health. Theory and observations both show nucleation favored during clean days inhibited haze episodes due high pre-existing condensation sink (CS). Here we the surprising occurrence of in Beijing associated concentration sulfuric acid dimers. With field model simulations, demonstrate downward mixing sulfur dioxide (SO2) from residual layer aloft enhances ground level SO2, which turn elevates dimer after rapid SO2 oxidation polluted air. Our results address key gap between source its atmospheric products conditions megacity, Beijing, providing missing link complete chain describing atmosphere.

Temporal variations of black carbon during haze and non-haze days in Beijing
Black carbon (BC) aerosol has been identified as one of key factors responsible for air quality in Beijing. BC emissions abatement could help slow regional climate change while providing benefits for public health. In order to quantify its variations and contribution to air pollution, we systematically studied real-time measurements of equivalent black carbon (eBC) in PM2.5 aerosols at an urban...
متن کاملSize-resolved source apportionment of particulate matter in urban Beijing during haze and non-haze episodes
Additional size-resolved chemical information is needed before the physicochemical characteristics and sources of airborne particles can be understood; however, this information remains unavailable in most regions of China due to lacking measurement data. In this study, we report observations of various chemical species in size-segregated particle samples that were collected over 1 year in the ...
متن کاملAtmospheric Boundary-layer Structure Observed during a Haze Event Due to Forest-fire Smoke
During a haze event in Baltimore, U.S.A. from July 6 to 8, 2002, smoke from forest fires in the Québec region (Canada), degraded air quality and impacted upon local climate, decreasing solar radiation and air temperature. The smoke particles in and above the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) served as a tracer and provided a unique opportunity to investigate the ABL structure, especially entrain...

particulate matters commonly found dispersed in the atmosphere are composed of a large variety of substances. dustfall is the usual index of particles in the size range greater than 10 m. two semi automated so2 sampling units were installed in tehran university campus (from 21 january 1973 to 22 dec. 1974) and gheitarieh area (from 23 august to 23 oct. 1974) hydrogen peroxide method was used fo...
