Sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim synergism for Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
Sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim are synergistic against many bacteria in sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim concentrations of 20:1, but single-dose therapy of gonorrhea with the combination is disappointing. We used agar dilution techniques to determine minimal inhibitory concentrations of sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim for 168 gonococci isolated from men with acute urethritis in Atlanta, Ga. T...
متن کاملComparison of in vitro susceptibility of Neisseria gonorrhoeae to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole on three different media.
In vitro susceptibility of 100 clinical isolates of Neisseria gonorrhoeae to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMZ combination; 1:19) was determined by the agar dilution technique using three different media under similar conditions. On Oxoid diagnostic sensitivity test, Mueller-Hinton, and GC agar media, the percentage of isolates inhibited by 2.5 mug or less of TMP per ml and 47.5 mug or les...
متن کاملTuberculosis and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole.
The sulfonamides were the first drugs with antituberculous effects. Their use was abandoned and basically forgotten with the advent of streptomycin and isoniazid combination treatment. There is a widespread belief, apparently based on testing a single isolate on questionable media, that Mycobacterium tuberculosis is resistant to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX). We saw a complex immunoco...
متن کاملMyocarditis after Trimethoprim/Sulfamethoxazole Treatment for Ehrlichiosis
The manifestations of human monocytic ehrlichiosis range from a mild febrile syndrome to a severe multisystem illness. Myocardial involvement is uncommon. We report a woman, 78 years of age, who was treated with trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole after a tick bite, in whom myocarditis was subsequently diagnosed. She recovered completely after doxycycline therapy.
متن کاملConsiderations when prescribing trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole.
famethoxazole remains a popular antibiotic because of its low cost, effectiveness and familiarity among clinicians. It is the most frequently prescribed antibiotic for urinary tract infections in Canada. Other indications include treatment of infections caused by Pneumocystis jiroveci, Toxoplasma gondii, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia and community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus ...
