چکیده

Abstract. The detachment of large parts low-angle mountain glaciers resulting in massive ice–rock avalanches have so far been believed to be a unique type event, made known the global scientific community first for 2002 Kolka Glacier detachment, Caucasus Mountains, and then 2016 collapses two Aru range, Tibet. Since 2016, several so-far unrecognized glacier detachments recognized described, new ones occurred. In current contribution, we compile, compare, discuss 20 actual or suspected large-volume at 10 different sites Caucasus, Pamirs, Tibet, Altai, North American Cordillera, Southern Andes. Many reached volumes order 10–100 million m3. similarities differences between presented cases indicate that often involve coincidental combination factors related lowering basal friction, high increasing driving stresses, concentration shear stress, low resistance exceed stability thresholds. Particularly soft beds seem common condition among observed events as they offer smooth contact areas underlying substrate are prone till-strength weakening eventually failure under pore-water pressure. Partially fully thawed bed conditions presence liquid water could thus play an important role detachments. Surface slopes detached range around 10? 20?. This may enough enable development thick while also being steep allow critical stresses build up. We construct simple slab model estimate ranges slope width above which able detach when extensively losing resistance. From this all described study occurred due stress reduction more than 50 %. Most from particularly angle reach, down 5?, likely their ice content connected liquefaction potential, availability slurries, amounts water, well topographic setting typical glacial valleys. Low-angle combine elements physical processes surges break-offs glaciers. surge-like temporal evolution ahead geographic proximity other surge-type investigated can interpreted endmembers continuum instabilities. Though rare, appear frequent commonly thought disclose, despite local precursory evolutions, fundamental potential fail catastrophically.

More ties than we thought

We extend the existing enumeration of neck tie knots to include tie knots with a textured front, tied with the narrow end of a tie. These tie knots have gained popularity in recent years, based on reconstructions of a costume detail from The Matrix Reloaded, and are explicitly ruled out in the enumeration by Fink and Mao (2000). We show that the relaxed tie knot description language that compre...

Severe Ketoacidosis (pH ≤ 6.9) in Type 2 Diabetes: More Frequent and Less Ominous Than Previously Thought

Diabetic ketoacidosis is a life-threatening acute metabolic complication of uncontrolled diabetes. Severe cases of DKA (pH ≤ 7.00, bicarbonate level ≤ 10.0, anion gap > 12, positive ketones, and altered mental status) are commonly encountered in patients with type 1 diabetes and are thought to carry an ominous prognosis. There is not enough information on the clinical course of severely acidoti...

Immunodeficiency - “ Much More Common Than We Thought ”

10 years with the development of new genetic techniques more than 100 mutations in various genes were found to be associated with primary immunodeficiencies entities. It should be noted that in some diseases several hundreds of patients were found, while in others only few children were discovered, thus applying that we are dealing with rare situations. Using the same genetic techniques a new c...

Vitamins are more Funky than Casimir thought.

Introduction In 2012 we celebrate the centenary of Dr Casimir Funk’s discovery of the 'vitamine'. Funk was the first to suggest the existence of a family of organic substances that are essential for life, which the world now takes for granted. He was thus the godfather of the vitamin movement. Funk conceived the concept of “vital amines”; essential nutrients with a specific action, requiring on...
