Subseasonal controls of U.S. landfalling tropical cyclones

چکیده
Abstract Landfalling tropical cyclones (LTCs) are the most devastating disaster to affect U.S., while demonstration of skillful subseasonal (between 10 days and one season) prediction LTCs is less promising. Understanding mechanisms governing variation TC activity fundamental improving its forecast, which critical interest decision-makers insurance industry. This work reveals three localized atmospheric circulation modes with significant 10–30 variations: Piedmont Oscillation (PO), Great America Dipole (GAD), Subtropical High ridge (SHR) modes. These strongly modulate precipitation, genesis, intensity, track, landfall near U.S. coast. Compared their strong negative phases, East Coast has 19 times more during positive phases PO, Gulf experiences 4–12 frequent GAD SHR. Results from GFDL SPEAR model show a 13, 9, 22 for these modes, respectively. Our findings expected benefit on weather timescale also suggest opportunities exist predictions associated heavy rainfalls.

Rainfall distribution of five landfalling tropical cyclones in the northwestern Australian region
Rain gauge data, satellite IR brightness temperature and radar-estimated rain rate for five tropical cyclones from the 2005–06 to 2009–10 seasons that made landfall along the northwestern coast of Australia are analysed. It is the first time that the spatial rainfall distribution of landfalling tropical cyclones in the southern hemisphere has been systematically investigated. It is found that t...
متن کاملClouds in Tropical Cyclones
Clouds within the inner regions of tropical cyclones are unlike those anywhere else in the atmosphere. Convective clouds contributing to cyclogenesis have rotational and deep intense updrafts but tend to have relatively weak downdrafts. Within the eyes of mature tropical cyclones, stratus clouds top a boundary layer capped by subsidence. An outward-sloping eyewall cloud is controlled by adjustm...
متن کاملThe Dynamics of Tropical Cyclones
The specific objectives of the current effort are: 1. To continue our study of the dynamical processes in tropical cyclones responsible for looping or erratic motion; 2. To continue the development of methods for (a) the introduction of synthetic tropical-cyclone-scale vortices in operational forecast models and (b) ensemble forecasting of tropical cyclones; 3. To continue a sensitivity study o...
متن کاملTargeted Observation of Tropical Cyclones
The advance in targeted observations of tropical cyclone movement is reviewed in this article. The targeted observations from DOTSTAR (Dropwindsonde Observations for Typhoon Surveillance near the Taiwan Region) in understanding and improving the tropical cyclone track predictability is highlighted, along with the progress of the field program of THORPEX-PARC in the summer of 2008. The impact of...
متن کاملHelical organization of tropical cyclones
In this work we consider a helical flow organization on small and large space scales in a forming tropical cyclone and offer a quantitative analysis for early stages in evolution of large-scale helical vortex based on diagnosis of a set of integral helical and energetic characteristics. Using the data from a near cloud-resolving numerical simulation by Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (RAMS...
