Submarine Basaltic Magmatism in the Subbetic Basin (Southern Spain): Insights into Melt-Weakening Processes during Mesozoic Continental Rifting

چکیده

Abstract Mantle-derived volcanic rocks from the Subbetic hyperextended basin in SE Spain provide new insights into composition and mechanical behavior of mantle during continental rifting. The present study describes a sequential restored cross-section along with geochemical characteristics basaltic interbedded within Mesozoic succession basin. Sedimentary stacking patterns minibasins above mobilized salt reflect relationships coeval volcanism. We recognize two type localities on basis facies, presence shallow intrusive bodies, age associated sedimentary formations. first corresponds to subaqueous pillow-lava flows subvolcanic sills dikes Lower Jurassic marly limestones Middle oolitic limestones. basalts enriched MORB compositions moderate La/Sm low Sm/Yb ratios. Interestingly, significant group this magmatism departs typical MORB-OIB array, showing deep Nb-Ta negative anomalies high Th/Nb second comprises lava flows, also including pillow-shaped interlayered hyaloclastite deposits Upper Cretaceous clays, radiolarites, is characterized by highly compositions. Furthermore, values positive correlation between LREE/HREE Zr point involvement (Grt-present) sources origin melts. interpret Lower-Middle calc-alkaline signal as due partial melting recycled crustal upper mantle, i.e., remnants pre-Mesozoic subducted slabs. These are similar those described Triassic widespread throughout External Zone Betic Cordillera. syn-rift indicate that deformation lithospheric was initiated early Accordingly, we suggest Early melts promoted failure thus contributing inception lithospheric-scale shear zones, which, turn, controlled evolution magma-poor margin. Subsequently, rift gave way activation deeper melt an increase alkaline signature at time.

Mesozoic thermal history of the Prebetic continental margin (southern Spain): Constraints from apatite fission-track analysis

Apatite fission-track analysis was applied to Triassic and Cretaceous sediments from the South-Iberian Continental Margin to unravel its thermal history. Apatite fission-track age populations from Triassic samples indicate partial annealing and point to a maximum temperature of around 100–110 °C during their post-depositional evolution. In certain apatites from Cretaceous samples, two different...

Glauconite and phosphate peloids in Mesozoic carbonate sediments (Eastern Subbetic Zone, Betic Cordilleras, SE Spain)

AB STRACT: Glauconite and Ca phosphate peloids occur in Jurassic and Cretaceous bioclastic carbonate rocks from pelagic swell sequences of the Algayat-Crevillente Unit (Subbetic Zone). The size and morphology of the peloids are controlled by the bioclasts. The glauconite in both stratigraphic positions is K rich (>0.69 atoms p.f.u.) and shows well-defined 10 AÊ lattice fringes. Poorly crystalli...

Introduction: Anatomy of rifting: Tectonics and magmatism in continental rifts, oceanic spreading centers, and transforms

Research at continental rifts, mid-ocean ridges, and transforms has shown that new plates are created by extensional tectonics, magma intrusion, and volcanism. Studies of a wide variety of extensional processes ranging from plate thinning to magma intrusion have helped scientists understand how continents are broken apart to form ocean basins. However, deformation processes vary significantly d...

The development and refinement of continental arcs by primary basaltic magmatism, garnet pyroxenite accumulation, basaltic recharge and delamination: insights from the Sierra Nevada, California

The lower crust of the Mesozoic Sierra Nevada batholith was made up of high MgO, garnet-poor and low MgO, garnet-rich pyroxenites. Both groups are genetically linked and are collectively complementary to the mafic to intermediate Sierran plutons. High MgO pyroxenites represent high pressure cumulates from a mantle-derived hydrous basalt or basaltic andesite, resulting in derivative magmas havin...
