Subcritical and supercritical granular flow around an obstacle on a rough inclined plane

چکیده

A blunt obstacle in the path of a rapid granular avalanche generates bow shock (a jump thickness and velocity), region static grains upstream obstacle, grain-free downstream. Here, it is shown that this interaction qualitatively altered if incline on which flowing changed from smooth to rough. On rough incline, friction between depends flow speed, allows both (supercritical) slow (subcritical) steady uniform avalanches. For supercritical experimental flows, material diverted around by formation dead zone obstacle. Downslope, vacuum forms, but, contrast flows beds, levees form at boundary flow. In slower, subcritical, smoothly without forming shock. After stops, signatures zone, (in subcritical flows) deeper upslope are frozen into deposit. To capture behaviour, numerical simulations performed with depth-averaged model includes frictional hysteresis viscous terms, needed accurately deposited regions. These results may be directly relevant geophysical mass snow avalanches, over terrain impact barriers or other infrastructure.

Granular flow down an inclined plane: Bagnold scaling and rheology.

We have performed a systematic, large-scale simulation study of granular media in two and three dimensions, investigating the rheology of cohesionless granular particles in inclined plane geometries, i.e., chute flows. We find that over a wide range of parameter space of interaction coefficients and inclination angles, a steady-state flow regime exists in which the energy input from gravity bal...

Rapid granular ow on a rough inclined

Flow on an inclined plane is both one of the most common situations encountered in granular ows, as well as one of the most extensively studied geometries in their theoretical treatment. Nevertheless, so far there are very few systematic studies concerning the innuence of the (dissipative) material properties on the ow. Here, numerical simulations are presented where the focus is on the innuenc...

Avalanche dynamics on a rough inclined plane.

The avalanche behavior of gravitationally forced granular layers on a rough inclined plane is investigated experimentally for different materials and for a variety of grain shapes ranging from spherical beads to highly anisotropic particles with dendritic shape. We measure the front velocity, area, and height of many avalanches and correlate the motion with the area and height. We also measure ...

Unsteady granular flows down an inclined plane.

The continuum description of granular flows is still a challenge despite their importance in many geophysical and industrial applications. We extend previous works, which have explored steady flow properties, by focusing on unsteady flows accelerating or decelerating down an inclined plane in the simple shear configuration. We solve the flow kinematics analytically, including predictions of evo...
