Studying Reaction Mechanisms in Solution Using a Distributed Electron Microscopy Method

Electron microscopy (EM) of materials undergoing chemical reactions provides knowledge the underlying mechanisms. However, mechanisms are often complex and cannot be fully resolved using a single method. Here, we present distributed electron method for studying reactions. The combines information from multiple stages reaction EM methods, including liquid phase (LP-EM), cryogenic (cryo-EM), cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET). We demonstrate this by desilication mechanism zeolite crystals. Collectively, our data reveal that proceeds via two-step anisotropic etching process defects in curved surfaces between subunits crystal control kinetics directing mass transport.
