Study on the Treatment of Simulated Recirculating Mariculture Wastewater by Thiosulfate-Based Autotrophic Denitrification

In this study, a sulfur-based autotrophic denitrifying filter (SADF) was developed for the purpose of removing nitrate from simulated recirculating mariculture wastewater. Results showed that over 90% could be effectively eliminated by utilizing thiosulfate as electron donor, with molar ratio thiosulfate-S to 2:1 or greater. Additional batch tests confirmed suitable sulfur source removal even without prior accumulation biomass nitrite. Excess had minor impact on N-removal efficiency, so an external not required removal, however, it still help reduce and water replacement some extent. High-throughput sequencing results illustrated Thiomicrospira Thioalkalivibrio were dominant genera in SADF, while more significantly affected case insufficient sources. As issue system has been resolved, only small amount needs added daily. Therefore, thiosulfate-based SADF process potential implemented systems, which present promising sustainable solution pollution issue.
