چکیده

Abstract Background Aphidophagous syrphid, Ischiodon scutellaris (Fabricius) (Diptera: Syrphidae) is an effective predator of aphids that infest many agricultural and horticultural crops. Cowpea aphid, Aphis craccivora Koch (Hemiptera: Aphididae), the natural host for culturing syrphid predator, I. . The present study was conducted to evaluate feeding development on seven species aphid hosts viz., A. , fabae Scopoli, gossypii Glover (from cotton), Schoutedenia emblica (Patel & Kulkarni), Brevicoryne brassicae (L.), okra) Hyperomyzus carduellinus (Theobald) identify alternative maintain culture during situation non-availability/loss Results not accepted by larvae did survive S. descending order potential > H. Conclusion results confirmed Lactuca virosa could serve as alternate mass production

Scale effects on the attachment pads and friction forces in syrphid flies (Diptera, Syrphidae).

To test the role of constructional and dimensional factors in the generation of friction force by systems of setose attachment pads, six species of syrphid fly (Platycheirus angustatus, Sphaerophoria scripta, Episyrphus balteatus, Eristalis tenax, Myathropa florea and Volucella pellucens) were studied using light and scanning electron microscopy. Flies were selected according to their various b...

Estimating Predatory Efficiency of Episyrphus balteatus (Diptera: Syrphidae) in Cereal Fields

A model was developed to estimate the effect of predation by Episyrphus balteatus larvae on aphid populations in fields of winter wheat. Feeding rate of syrphid larvae was estimated from experiments in field cages using a Holling type-III function. During larval development, syrphids consumed a maximum of 396 aphids, which is only half the potential feeding rate reported from laboratory experim...

Predators of the rosy apple aphid, Dysaphis plantaginea (Pass.), in Asturian (NW Spain) apple orchards

Alternative strategies to the common practice of spraying with insecticide in order to control the rosy apple aphid Dysaphis plantaginea (Pass.) (Homoptera: Aphididae) are required. Biological control by natural enemies is a possible tool. In Asturies, despite the tradition of growing local cider apple trees, there are no studies about the community of D. plantaginea predators and their impact ...

The forgotten flies: the importance of non-syrphid Diptera as pollinators

Bees, hoverflies and butterflies are taxa frequently studied as pollinators in agricultural and conservation contexts. Although there are many records of non-syrphid Diptera visiting flowers, they are generally not regarded as important pollinators. We use data from 30 pollen-transport networks and 71 pollinator-visitation networks to compare the importance of various flower-visiting taxa as po...

Australian Allograpta Osten Sacken (Diptera, Syrphidae)

Allograptaterraenovae sp. n. and Allograptanotiale sp. n. are described from Australia. Notes on the Australian species of Allograpta and an identification key to them are also given. The lectotype of Allograptajavana Wiedemann is designated, and the species Syrphuspallidus Bigot is synonymized under Allograptaaustralensis (Schiner).
