چکیده

We present the study of mesospheric winds in 78–98 km height range using observations by a partial reflection radar station (MF–radar) situated at Kolhapur (16.8° N, 74.2° E), India. The sequential wind profiles over period 2014–2019 obtained from this operated 1.98 MHz are used for study. To delineate behaviour mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) region, we use data providing horizontal velocities averaged an hour. Details seasonal, annual, inter-annual variations also climatology mean motion zonal (East-West) meridional (North-South) components MLT region aforementioned presented. below 90 has been observed with eastward flow solstices westward equinoxes, showing strong semi-annual oscillations (SAO). While above km, annual (AO) seen to be dominant. Annual wind, poleward during winter equatorward remaining seasons. At higher altitudes (above 92 km), weakens becomes strong.

Mean winds of the mesosphere and lower thermosphere at 52N in the period 1988–2000

A meteor radar in the UK (near 52 N) has been used to measure the mean winds of the mesosphere/lowerthermosphere (MLT) region over the period 1988–2000. The seasonal course and interannual variability is characterised and comparisons are made with a number of models. Annual mean wind trends were found to be +0.37 ms−1 yr−1 for the zonal component and +0.157 ms−1 yr−1 for the meridional componen...

Technical Note : On the possibly missing mechanism of 15 μ m emission in the mesosphere – lower thermosphere ( MLT )

Accurate knowledge of the rate as well as the mechanism of excitation of the bending mode of CO2 is necessary for reliable modeling of the mesosphere–lower thermosphere (MLT) region of the atmosphere. Assuming the excitation mechanism to be thermal collisions with atomic oxygen, the rate coefficient derived from the observed 15 μm emission by space-based experiments (kATM = 6.0× 10 cms) differs...

Silicon chemistry in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere

Silicon is one of the most abundant elements in cosmic dust, and meteoric ablation injects a significant amount of Si into the atmosphere above 80 km. In this study, a new model for silicon chemistry in the mesosphere/lower thermosphere is described, based on recent laboratory kinetic studies of Si, SiO, SiO2, and Si+. Electronic structure calculations and statistical rate theory are used to sh...
