Sialic Acid (n-acetylneuraminic Acid) in Human Serum.
A simple spectrophotometric method is described for the sialic acids which utilizes the reaction with resorcinol and extraction with butyl acetate-n-butanol as a solvent. Normal values for adults, utilizing N-acetylneuraminic acid as a standard, were found to be 60 ± 10.4 mg./100 ml. Values for newborn babies averaged 40.4 ± 5.7. Similar values were found for specimens from 2-month-old infants ...

N-Acetylneuraminic acid is transformed into its until now unavailable and rather unwieldy 1,7-lactone, via the manageable 2-benzyloxycarbonyl N-acetylneuraminic acid 1,7-lactone which generates the free lactone in quantitative yield by hydrogenolysis.

J. Bacteriol. 82:838-848. 1961.-Two sialic acids, N-acetylneuraminic acid and N,7-O-diacetylneuraminic acid, were obtained in crude mixtures from whole cells of Escherichia coli and from its endoto...
متن کاملStudies on the Stability of Simple Derivatives of Sialic Acid.
The sinlic acids, whose chemistry and metabolism have been reviewed repeatedly in the recent past (l-5), are important constituents of many biological heteropolymers. It is quite clear that the multiple types of linkage in which a nonulosaminic acid can engage may influence the outcome of reactions designed to demonstrate its presence, cstimatc its quantity, or determine its modes of attachment...
متن کاملSialic acids in human gastric aspirates: detection of 9-O-lactyl- and 9-O-acetyl-N-acetylneuraminic acids and a decrease in total sialic acid concentration with age.
1. The total sialic acid content of human gastric aspirates was measured using a colorimetric assay. Care was taken to optimize the assay and to eliminate interference. 2. The sialic acid content of gastric aspirates collected under resting conditions from 77 patients with non-ulcer dyspepsia was found to decrease with age from > 100 micrograms/ml at 25 years and younger to < 20 micrograms/ml a...
