STUDIES ON PREVALENCE OF TRYPANOSOME INFECTION IN ABATTOIRS IN ASABA, DELTA STATE, NIGERIA

This study investigated the prevalence of trypanosome infection in cattle and Red Sokoto (R.S) goats slaughtered at abattoirs Asaba, Delta State. 304 animals comprising 265 cattle, 39 R.S were examined. Blood was collected from jugular vein each animal into EDTA containers, placed cold boxes transported to Nigerian Institute for Trypanosomiasis Research (NITR) laboratory Asaba where standard detection methods (STDM), Haematocrit centrifugation technique (HCT) Buffy coat used detect trypanosomes determine Packed Cell Volume (PCV). The result investigation showed that seventeen (17) infected giving an overall 5.59%. Fifteen (5.66%) two (5.13%) infected. Female had higher trypanosomiasis (6.78%) than male (4.76%). Difference female statistically significant (p<0.05). In goats, 6.45% observed males while no found females. Three species Trypanosoma namely, Trypansoma vivax, T. congolense brucei recorded animals. only goats. There a difference between mean PCV value non-infected (p < 0.05). this clearly indicates presence abattoir
