Colicin typing of Shigella sonnei.
The colicin typing method for differentiating epidemic strains of Shigella sonnei was evaluated. Forty percent of the strains were untypable, but the method divides 60% of the strains into 15 established colicin types. The method has reasonably good reproducibility, but should not be interpreted with the same degree of confidence as some other characteristics such as serotypes. For this reason,...
متن کاملSalicin fermentation by Shigella sonnei.
Shigella species are generally considered to be unable to ferment salicin (Breed, Murray, and Smith, Bergey's Manual of Determinative Bacteriology, The Williams & Wilkins Co., Baltimore, 1957; Kauffmann, Enterobacteriaceae, E. Munksgaard, Copenhagen, 1950; Edwards and Ewing, Identification of Enterobacteriaceae, Burgess Publishing Co., Minneapolis, 1955). Recently, however, Ser6ny (Acta Microbi...
متن کاملColicin type 7 produced by majority of Shigella sonnei isolated from Thai patients with diarrhoea
Thirty one out of 153 strains of Shigella sonnei isolated from Thai patients with diarrhoea showed antibacterial activity against S. sonnei by agar well diffusion method. All of them harbor plasmids with the genetic determination of colicin type 7 (Js) gene but without colicin E and colicin U gene. The PCR product obtained from strain 35/44 was shown to be the gene for colicin type 7 lytic prot...
متن کاملColicin U, a novel colicin produced by Shigella boydii.
A novel colicin, designated colicin U, was found in two Shigella boydii strains of serovars 1 and 8. Colicin U was active against bacterial strains of the genera Escherichia and Shigella. Plasmid pColU (7.3 kb) of the colicinogenic strain S. boydii M592 (serovar 8) was sequenced, and three colicin genes were identified. The colicin U activity gene, cua, encodes a protein of 619 amino acids (Mr,...
متن کاملMacrolide-Resistant Shigella sonnei
Shigella sonnei UCN59, isolated during an outbreak of S. sonnei in January 2007, was resistant to azithromycin (MIC 64 mg/L). The isolate contained a plasmid-borne mph(A) gene encoding a macrolide 2 -phosphotransferase that inactivates macrolides. Emergence of the mph(A) gene in S. sonnei may limit usefulness of azithromycin for treatment of shigellosis.
