Structure‐property relationships of waterborne polyurethane (<scp>WPU</scp>) in aqueous formulations

This study provides an overview of the rheological properties aqueous polyurethanes (WPU), as main component, or a thickening additive in formulations. Waterborne (WPU) have been proposed environmentally friendly alternative to conventional solvent-based solutions variety industrial applications such coatings, adhesives, inks. In all these fields, control became important prerogative determine quality dispersion and its potential applicability. First, effect parameters components, particle size content, temperature, interactions on viscosity was reported. Then, two additives, i.e. thickeners nanomaterials, structure–property relationships WPU-base systems, described. Thickeners are modifiers, commonly used stabilize prevent flocculation sedimentation particles, change flow behavior dispersions from Newtonian pseudoplastic. These species can interact with water polymer particles create network structure that alters resistance, thus viscosity. The use hyperbranched polyurethane agent WPU formulations also presented. On other hand, nanostructured fillers (0D/1D/2D) combination thereof waterborne led formation specific microstructures prevented penetration water, oxygen, corrosive substances, improved mechanical thermal properties, allowing development high-performance WPU-based products.
