Structure, composition and diversity of tree species in Martelu Purba Nature Reserve, North Sumatra, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 24: 78-85. Reserve is one the conservation areas Sumatra that functions to protect biodiversity. However, there limited information related vegetation community contained nature reserve. This study aimed assess diversity, structure as well reveal status The research used line transect method with a total 112 observation plots representing various environmental conditions. results showed were 39 belonging 25 families, 31, 25, 24, 26 at tree, pole, sapling, seedling stages, respectively. Shorea platyclados Syzygium cerasiforme highest Important Value Index (IVI) pole stages 173.04% 31.01%, respectively, while Gamblea malayana was most important sapling IVI 66.43%, 30.00%, Shannon-Wiener index (H') categorized low (1.58), Margalef richness (DMg) high all growth Evenness (E) high, indicating evenly distributed across plots. distribution diameter classes ranged from 20 - 40 cm for trees smallest 81-110 largest diameter. Based on their status, two concerns, namely Coffea arabica (Endangered) Lithocarpus maingayi (Vulnerable). application good silvicultural methods needs be carried out context efforts. One example through vegetative propagation long flowering periods.

Impact of Lowland Rainforest Transformation on Diversity and Composition of Soil Prokaryotic Communities in Sumatra (Indonesia)

Prokaryotes are the most abundant and diverse group of microorganisms in soil and mediate virtually all biogeochemical cycles in terrestrial ecosystems. Thereby, they influence aboveground plant productivity and diversity. In this study, the impact of rainforest transformation to intensively managed cash crop systems on soil prokaryotic communities was investigated. The studied managed land use...

Taeniasis and cysticercosis in Bali and North Sumatra, Indonesia.

It has been reported that three human Taenia species are distributed in Indonesia: Taenia solium, Taenia asiatica and Taenia saginata. T. asiatica is well known in North Sumatra, especially on Samosir island in Lake Toba. T. solium and T. saginata are known from Bali. T. solium is most serious public health issue in Papua (former Irian Jaya). In this report, we briefly review the present situat...

Fire Ecology of Ground Vegetation in Pinus roxburghii Sargent Plantations in North-West Himalaya - Floristic Composition and Species Diversity

Effect of fire on phyto-sociology of understorey vegetation in chir pine forests of three different silvological characteristics was compared with pure grassland. 15 grasses, 1 sedge, 5 legumes and 21 non-legumes were recorded in the four study sites. Floristic composition gradually increased from June to August and then declined slowly by October in all the plots. Maximum number of species wa...

Community composition and diversity of ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) in Yaoluoping National Nature Reserve

This study used pitfall trapping to examine community composition and diversity of ground beetles in five different habitats (coniferous, deciduous, mixed coniferous, farmland, and settlements) within Anhui Yaoluoping National Nature Reserve from May to September 2014. In total, 1,352 ground beetles were collected, belonging to 16 genera and 44 species. Of these, four dominant species Dolichus ...

Invasion by Cordgrass Increases Microbial Diversity and Alters Community Composition in a Mangrove Nature Reserve

Invasion by exotic plant species can alter ecosystem function and reduce native plant diversity, but relatively little is known about their effects on belowground microbial communities. Here we investigated the effects of exotic cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora) invasion on the distribution of soil bacterial communities in a mangrove nature reserve of the Jiulong River Estuary, southeast China ...
