Structural biology of innate immunity.
Innate immune responses depend on timely recognition of pathogenic or danger signals by multiple cell surface or cytoplasmic receptors and transmission of signals for proper counteractions through adaptor and effector molecules. At the forefront of innate immunity are four major signaling pathways, including those elicited by Toll-like receptors, RIG-I-like receptors, inflammasomes, or cGAS, ea...
متن کاملInnate immunity
From the discovery of antibodies in the late nineteenth century until very recently, the focus of most research in immunology has been the so-called adaptive immune response. Adaptive immune responses are highly specific for a given microorganism and it is the T and B lymphocytes of the adaptive immune response, and the antibodies produced by the B lymphocytes, that are responsible for lasting ...

Recent years have witnessed an explosion of interest in the innate immune system. Questions about how the innate immune system senses infection and empowers a protective immune response are being answered at the molecular level. These basic science discoveries are being translated into a more complete understanding of the central role innate immunity plays in the pathogenesis of many human infe...

trophil extracellular traps [5, 6] . In this issue, Carlsen et al. [7] demonstrate differential neutrophil responsiveness to distinct species of Leishmania amastigotes, the cause of cutaneous leishmaniasis in South America. Their findings suggest that different species possess specific mechanisms of resistance against neutrophil effector functions, and that this should be subject to further res...
متن کاملISOLATION AND STRUCTURAL ELUCIDATION OF THE FIRST KNOWN C-HOMOPROTOBERBERINE
A novel C-homoprotoberberine alkaloid, Hediamine (2), has been isolated from the roots of Berberis actinucantha (Berberidaceae). Conclusive proof for the structure of hediamine was obtained by its comparison with the isomeric lactam (4), by chemical transformation, and by means of spectroscopic techniques (UV, IR, MS, NMR).
