چکیده
The giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) is a vulnerable species from Central and South America, considered possibly extinct in Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, Uruguay. Due to the species’ conservation reproductive importance, this research aimed characterize morphology, histochemical, immunohistochemical, ultrastructural feature of prostate gland. For this, we collected 11 glands performed macroscopic, morphological, analysis. Nine an adult subject two young subjects were studied. Grossly, gland divided distinct zones; central zones (composed mainly ducts) peripheral (of acini formed by secretory cells). cells showed positive periodic acid–Schiff staining. Furthermore, immunohistochemical characterization revealed similar human pattern, with p63 staining basal cells, uroplakin III (UPIII) superficial prostatic urethra, androgen receptor (AR) expressing nucleus stromal specific antigen (PSA) epithelial cells. Overall, our provided in-depth morphological description anteater’s gland, providing valuable information for futures studies focused on conservation.

Identification of microsatellite DNA markers for the giant anteater Myrmecophaga tridactyla.
The giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) is found from Belize and Guatemala to Paraguay and Argentina. Its conservation status is considered vulnerable by IUCN. Here we report the isolation and characterization of six microsatellite loci. Positive loci for (GT)(n) were isolated using a magnetic bead hybridization selection protocol. The number of alleles per locus as well as the heterozygos...
متن کاملPopulation structure and genetic diversity of the giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla: Myrmecophagidae, Pilosa) in Brazil
The giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla, Pilosa, Linnaeus 1758) belongs to the mammalian order Pilosa and presents a large distribution along South America, occupying a great variety of habitats. It is listed in the IUCN Red List of threatened species as Vulnerable. Despite threatened, there is a lack of studies regarding its genetic variability. The aim of this study was to examine the gen...
متن کاملRecurrent tongue tip constriction in a captive giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla).
A male giant anteater (Myrmecophage tridactyla) was treated twice for tongue tip constrictions. Clinical signs were partial anorexia, soft stool, bleeding from the mouth, and intermittent lingual discomfort. In the first presentation, wood fibers constricting the distal part of the tongue were detected by endoscopy and were removed. In the second presentation, bands of collagenous fibers were i...
متن کاملSpatial Memory in Captive Giant Anteaters (Myrmecophaga tridactyla)
The type of learning exhibited during foraging has been studied in a large number of species. Species that feed on food sources that temporally vary in quality could be well suited for exhibiting evidence of spatial learning. The foraging strategies of captive giant anteaters were examined using an experimental foraging task. Two giant anteaters were exposed to a modified radial arm maze in ord...
متن کاملEnergy intake for maintenance in a mammal with a low basal metabolism, the giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla).
Giant anteaters (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) are among those mammals for which a particularly low metabolism has been reported. In order to verify presumably low requirements for energy, we used eight anteaters (two males, six females; aged 1-14 years; body mass between 46 and 64 kg) in a total of 64 individual trials, in which a variety of intake levels was achieved on various diets. Digestible e...
