Size Evolution of the Most Massive Galaxies at 1.7 < Z < 3 from Goods Nicmos Survey Imaging
We measure the sizes of 82 massive (M ≥ 10M⊙) galaxies at 1.7 ≤ z ≤ 3 utilizing deep HST NICMOS data taken in the GOODS North and South fields. Our sample is almost an order of magnitude larger than previous studies at these redshifts, providing the first statistical study of massive galaxy sizes at z > 2, confirming the extreme compactness of these galaxies. We split our sample into disk-like ...
متن کاملMild Velocity Dispersion Evolution of Spheroid-like Massive Galaxies since Z ∼ 2
Making use of public spectra from Cimatti et al. (2008), we measure for the first time the velocity dispersion of spheroid-like massive (M ⋆ ∼ 10 11 M ⊙) galaxies at z ∼ 1.6. By comparing with galaxies of similar stellar mass at lower redshifts, we find evidence for a mild evolution in velocity dispersion, decreasing from ∼ 240 km s −1 at z ∼ 1.6 down to ∼ 180 km s −1 at z ∼ 0. Such mild evolut...

متن کاملThe Growth in Size and Mass of Cluster Galaxies since z = 2 Chervin
We study the formation and evolution of Brightest Cluster Galaxies starting from a z = 2 population of quiescent ellipticals and following them to z = 0. To this end, we use a suite of nine high-resolution dark matter-only simulations of galaxy clusters in a ΛCDM universe. We develop a scheme in which simulation particles are weighted to generate realistic and dynamically stable stellar density...
متن کاملEvolution of the Most Massive Galaxies to z ∼0.6: II. The link between radio AGN activity and star formation
We analyze the optical spectra of massive (log M∗/M⊙ > 11.4) radio-loud galaxies at z ∼ 0.2 and z ∼ 0.6. Our samples are generated by crossmatching the SDSS DR7 and BOSS spectroscopic galaxy catalogues with the FIRST and NVSS radio continuum surveys. By comparing stellar population parameters of these radio-loud samples with radio-quiet control samples matched in stellar mass, velocity dispersi...
