Stress Concentration in Open Hole Laminate Composites Under Bending: Potential Application in Dental Implant Prosthesis

Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) have been gaining prominence in replacing metallic alloys for infrastructure prostheses, with the possibility of edentulous patients to acquire fixed prostheses. For this, procedures are required connect these implants implant-supported prosthesis, such as holes and notches that can reduce their mechanical properties. In addition, requires longer cantilevers, causing greater stress on prosthetic system. Then, objective is analyze concentration CFRP subjected bending loads (4 6 mm diameter verify influence diameter-to-width ratio) four-point-bending test. Two composite laminates were evaluated: one thermoplastic matrix poly(phenylene sulphide) PPS; another epoxy combined carbon fibers fabric. The presence studied dimensions did not present significant differences flexural modulus maximum strength. Therefore, use showed some advantage regarding reduced effect compared alloys.
