Elasticity of Mg2SiO4 ringwoodite at mantle conditions
The themoelastic properties of Mg2SiO4 ringwoodite at mantle pressure and temperature conditions are reported based on ab nitio molecular dynamic simulations. A third-order Birch–Murnaghan equation at a reference temperature of 2000 K is defined by 0 = 138 GPa, K′ 0 = 5.2, and V0(2000 K) = 560.3 Å3. The Grűneisen parameter is determined to be γ(V) = γ0(V/V0(298 K))q with 3 δT 0 = 1.22 and q= 1....
متن کاملCrystal structure, equation of state, and elasticity of phase H (MgSiO4H2) at Earth’s lower mantle pressures
Dense hydrous magnesium silicate (DHMS) phases play a crucial role in transporting water in to the Earth's interior. A newly discovered DHMS, phase H (MgSiO4H2), is stable at Earth's lower mantle, i.e., at pressures greater than 30 GPa. Here we report the crystal structure and elasticity of phase H and its evolution upon compression. Using first principles simulations, we have explored the rela...
متن کاملCaSiO3 perovskite at lower mantle pressures
[1] We investigate by first-principles the structural behavior of CaSiO3 perovskite up to lower mantle pressures. We confirm that the cubic perovskite modification is unstable at all pressures. The zero Kelvin structure is stabilized by SiO6 octahedral rotations that lower the symmetry to tetragonal, orthorhombic, rhombohedral, or to a cubic supercell. The resulting structures have comparable e...
متن کاملIn Situ Elasticity Measurements of Unquenchable MgSiO3 Clinoenstatite at Upper Mantle Conditions
Introduction A phase transformation from orthorhombic (orthoenstatite [OEN], space group Pbca) to monoclinic symmetry in (Mg,Fe)SiO3, a common constituent of the Earth’s crust and upper mantle, is likely to occur in the deeper portion of the upper mantle [1, 2]. Angel et al. [3] confirmed that the clinoenstatite phase above 8 GPa is an unquenchable, high-pressure, monoclinic phase (highpressure...
متن کاملStructure and elasticity of wadsleyite at high pressures
The athermal equilibrium structure, the equation of state, the elastic constants, and O atom charges were calculated for Mg2SiO4 wadsleyite over a range of pressures using a plane-wave pseudopotential method. The zero-pressure volume is 2% lower and the bulk modulus is 4.5% higher than experimentally observed. After correcting for zero point motion and the 300 K temperature difference between t...
