Stream diatom assemblages in an Arctic catchment: diversity and relationship to ecosystem-scale primary production

چکیده
We quantified benthic diatom diversity in streams the Miellajokka catchment, about 200 km north of Arctic circle Sweden. Beta among sites was related to local-scale environmental heterogeneity (occurring on order 1 or less), and its magnitude equal (Sørensen Index = 0.62) levels previously reported for rivers regional gradients across hundreds kilometres Fennoscandia. Species turnover dominant (77%) component beta catchment. Small, stress-tolerant taxa dominated assemblages, there were no clear patterns functional class sites. Site ordinates from non-metric dimensional scaling most strongly correlated with flood frequency (r 0.83) water temperature 0.89), which higher harsh tundra than below treeline. Additionally, site ecosystem-scale gross primary production — indicative a link between ecosystem function. Our results advance understanding by quantifying variation that is understudied this region, identifying consequences an process.

Diversity and stability in Mississippi stream fish assemblages
Positive correlations between diversity and stability have been reported for a number of ecosystems and are thought to be caused by a stabilizing effect of differential species’ responses to environmental perturbation. Empirical field studies in which investigators tested for diversity–stability relationships are lacking for some taxonomic groups and typically have not included tests of the imp...
متن کاملAre Hotspots Always Hotspots? The Relationship between Diversity, Resource and Ecosystem Functions in the Arctic
The diversity-ecosystem function relationship is an important topic in ecology but has not received much attention in Arctic environments, and has rarely been tested for its stability in time. We studied the temporal variability of benthic ecosystem functioning at hotspots (sites with high benthic boundary fluxes) and coldspots (sites with lower fluxes) across two years in the Canadian Arctic. ...
متن کاملEcosystem model intercomparison of under-ice and total primary production in the Arctic Ocean
Previous observational studies have found increasing primary production (PP) in response to declining sea ice cover in the Arctic Ocean. In this study, under-ice PP was assessed based on three coupled ice-ocean-ecosystem models participating in the Forum for Arctic Modeling and Observational Synthesis (FAMOS) project. All models showed good agreement with under-ice measurements of surface chlor...

[1] A new application of reflectance spectroscopy enables inferences of lake sediment chlorophyll a concentrations and hence of historical trends in lacustrine primary production. In a survey of six arctic lakes on Baffin Island (Nunavut, Canada), pronounced increases of spectrally-inferred chlorophyll a concentrations are consistently expressed in sediments deposited during the 20th century. C...

Article history: Received 21 December 2005 Received in revised form 6 March 2006 Accepted 27 March 2006 Available online 19 May 2006 Biodiversity (BD) and Net Primary Productivity (NPP) are intricately linked in complex ecosystems such that a change in the state of one of these variables can be expected to have an impact on the other. Usingmultiple regression analysis at the site and ecoregion ...
