Stratified Taylor–Couette flow: nonlinear dynamics

چکیده
A series of experiments on stratified Taylor–Couette flow in short aspect ratio wide-gap annuli found an intriguing and not-well-understood dynamics: nonlinear coherent structures appearing disappearing periodically, along with density layering reminiscent staircase profiles. detailed numerical study is presented the dynamics near onset instability this setting, which explains most characteristics experiments. The simulations show that centrifugal boundary layer inner rotating cylinder produces jets angular momentum forming Taylor cells are compressed axially due to strong stratification. These not axisymmetric from onset, but fact two sets displaced meet localized azimuthal defect regions where patched together; whole structure a wave wavenumber $m=1$ . presence endwalls annulus critical for understanding dynamics. Their impact cannot be accounted idealized periodic models. Another key ingredient role played by symmetries system. Although axial reflection symmetry weakly broken buoyancy effects, following there various branches solutions corresponding different ways system's may broken.

2DV Nonlinear k-ε Turbulence Modeling of Stratified Flows
The commonly used linear k-ε turbulence model is shown to be incapable of accurate prediction of turbulent flows, where non-isotropy is dominant. Two examples of non-isotropic flows, which have a wide range of applications in marine waters, are saline water flow and the stratified flows due to temperature gradients. These relate to stratification and consequently, variation of density through...
متن کاملStratified Kolmogorov flow . Part 2
Forced stratified flows are shown to suffer two types of linear long-wave instability: a ‘viscous’ instability which is related to the classical instability of Kolmogorov flow, and a ‘conductive instability’, with the form of a large-scale, negative thermal diffusion. The nonlinear dynamics of both instabilities is explored with weakly nonlinear theory and numerical computations. The introducti...

متن کاملNonlinear progressive wave equation for stratified atmospheres.
The nonlinear progressive wave equation (NPE) [McDonald and Kuperman, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 81, 1406-1417 (1987)] is expressed in a form to accommodate changes in the ambient atmospheric density, pressure, and sound speed as the time-stepping computational window moves along a path possibly traversing significant altitude differences (in pressure scale heights). The modification is accomplished b...
متن کاملNonlinear Stability of Thin, Radially-Stratified Disks
We perform local numerical experiments to investigate the nonlinear stability of thin, radially-stratified disks. We demonstrate the presence of radial convective instability when the disk is nearly in uniform rotation, and show that the net angular momentum transport is slightly inwards, consistent with previous investigations of vertical convection. We then show that a convectively-unstable e...
