Storage ring for neutral atoms.
We have demonstrated a storage ring for ultracold neutral atoms. Atoms with mean velocities of 1 m/s corresponding to kinetic energies of approximately 100 neV are confined to a 2 cm diameter ring by magnetic forces produced by two current-carrying wires. Up to 10(6) atoms are loaded at a time in the ring, and seven revolutions are clearly observed. Additionally, we have demonstrated multiple l...
متن کاملProposed magnetoelectrostatic ring trap for neutral atoms
We propose a trap for confining cold neutral atoms in a microscopic ring using a magnetoelectrostatic potential. The trapping potential is derived from a combination of a repulsive magnetic field from a hard drive atom mirror and the attractive potential produced by a charged disk patterned on the hard drive surface. We calculate a trap frequency of f29.7,42.6,62.8g kHz and a depth of f16.1,21....
متن کاملLaser-Cooled Ions and Atoms in a Storage Ring
We review recent experiments at the Heidelberg Test Storage Ring which apply advanced laser cooling techniques to stored ion beams. Very high phase-space densities are achieved by threedimensional laser cooling of a coasting 9Be+ beam at 7.3 MeV. Laser-cooled, trapped Cs atoms are used as an ultracold precision target for the study of ion–atom interactions with a 74 MeV beam of 12C6+ ions.
متن کاملRing trap for ultracold atoms
We propose a toroidal trap designed for ultracold atoms. It relies on a combination of a magnetic trap for rf-dressed atoms, which creates a bubble-like trap, and a standing wave of light. This trap is well-suited for investigating questions of low dimensionality in a ring potential. We study the trap characteristics for a set of experimentally accessible parameters. A loading procedure from a ...
متن کاملFast quantum gates for neutral atoms
We propose several schemes for implementing a fast two-qubit quantum gate for neutral atoms with the gate operation time much faster than the time scales associated with the external motion of the atoms in the trapping potential. In our example, the large interaction energy required to perform fast gate operations is provided by the dipole-dipole interaction of atoms excited to low-lying Rydber...
