Stiffness and slip in multi-dowel timber connections with slotted-in steel plates

چکیده
Large multi-dowel connections can provide the strength and ductility required for large, highly-loaded timber structures, but their slip under load is not well understood. This an important gap in knowledge, because accumulated local displacements at represent a large part of deformation structure. The empirical relationships used design codes commonly scale single-dowel stiffness by number dowels, so do capture dowel interaction effects larger structures. We present results experimental test series, elastic model probabilistic numerical analysis investigating development with slotted-in steel plates. Novel methods record due to each individual connector show that complete connection proportional dowels. An stress-function shows this partly stress field around For first time, work quantitatively considers influence misalignment dowels manufacturing tolerances, it shown may greatly reduce overall connection. series validate such incorporates nonlinear hole opening observed predict behaviour group. study random reduces range over which displays zero slightly, zone eliminated as result irreversible load, even 35 three conclude two parameters are these connections: unload-reload zero-stiffness region measured between intercept linear fit. Load-carrying behaviour of steel-to-timber dowel connections
This paper details tests on steel-wood-steel connections with thin dowels carried out at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. Connections configurations were selected in such a way that the influence of the main parameters such as dowel slenderness ratio, dowel strength, fastener spacing and end distance and the number of dowels could be studied. An important issue of the pa...
متن کاملExperiments on dowel-type timber connections
Dowel-type connections are commonly used in timber engineering for a large range of structural applications. The current generation of design rules is largely based on empiricism and testing and lacks in many parts a stringent mechanical foundation. This often blocks an optimized use of the connections, which is essential for the design of economically efficient structures. Moreover, it severel...
متن کاملBiomechanics of bone-fracture fixation by stiffness-graded plates in comparison with stainless-steel plates
BACKGROUND In the internal fixation of fractured bone by means of bone-plates fastened to the bone on its tensile surface, an on-going concern has been the excessive stress-shielding of the bone by the excessively-stiff stainless-steel plate. The compressive stress-shielding at the fracture-interface immediately after fracture-fixation delays callus formation and bone healing. Likewise, the ten...

Effects of Reinforcement Geometry on Strength and Stiffness in Adhesively Bonded Steel-Timber Flexural Beams
A finite element model is developed to analyse, as a function of volume fraction, the effects of reinforcement geometry and arrangement within a timber beam. The model is directly validated against experimental equivalents and found to never be mismatched by more than 8% in respect to yield strength predictions. Yield strength increases linearly as a function of increasing reinforcement volume ...
