Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I
We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...
متن کاملDDO 43 : A Prototypical Dwarf Irregular Galaxy ?
We present sensitive and high resolution 21 cm observations of the dwarf irregular (dIm) galaxy DDO 43, in conjunction with optical broad and narrow band images in U, B, V, and Hα. The observations are used to examine the relationship between its H i morphology and kinematics to past and present star formation. Optically, it is a small (R25 = 990 pc), faint (MB of −14.0) Im with a slightly boxy...
متن کاملThe stellar populations of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy
We present B, V, I CCD photometry of about 40000 stars in four regions of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy down to V ∼ 23.5, the largest three-color data set obtained for this galaxy until now. The resultant color-magnitude diagrams, based on a wide color baseline, show a variety of features tracing the history of star formation of this dwarf galaxy. One of the most distinctive features in ou...
متن کاملA dwarf irregular galaxy at the edge of the Local Group : Stellar populations and distance of IC 5152 1
We have obtained V and I-band photometry for about 700 stars in the field of the dwarf irregular galaxy IC 5152, previously considered a possible member of the Local Group. Deep VI color–magnitude diagrams are presented of the main body of this galaxy and of a nearby field. We infer a distance by comparison with the VI color–magnitude diagrams of similar galaxies and with theoretical isochrones...
متن کاملStellar Populations of the Sagittarius Dwarf Irregular Galaxy
We present deep BV RI CCD photometry of the stars in the dwarf irregular galaxy SagDIG. The color-magnitude diagrams of the measured stars in SagDIG show a blue plume which consists mostly of young stellar populations, and a well-defined red giant branch (RGB). The foreground reddening of SagDIG is estimated to be E(B − V ) = 0.06. The tip of the RGB is found to be at ITRGB = 21.55 ± 0.10 mag. ...
