Status of Intestinal Schistosomiasis in Buffaloes and Cattle in Rajshahi, Bangladesh

Schistosoma infection causes serious health impediment in livestock with poor productive and reproductive performances. This study was carried out to know the status of buffaloes cattle Rajshahi, Bangladesh. The adult schistosomes were collected from mesenteries Rajshahi. Out 240 (120 each species) examined, 113 (47.08%) found infected. rate 54.16% 40%, respectively. Female buffalo (57.69% 46%) more prone than male (51.47% 36.71%) although differences not statistically significant. Significant variations (p<0.05) observed different season. highest rainy season (85% 65%) followed by summer (52.5% 40%) winter (25% 15%) both animals. Intensity greatly varied. Mostly, half infected animal (55% 46% cattle) showed moderate intensity (51 100 parasites/animal). High degree (>100 parasites/animal) 25% 33% cattle, Two species intestinal (S. indicum S. spindale) identified microscopically observing egg female parasites. present all whereas only 29% 35% samples contained spindale. determined current scenario schistosome findings might be helpful develop effective strategic plan overcome harmful effects Bangladesh.
