Stator Flux-Regulatory Excitation Control in Converter-Fed Synchronous Machines for Pumped-Storage Variable-Speed Hydropower

Pumped-storage hydropower is seen as a promising solution for efficient, large-scale energy storage. One competitive technical the variable-speed plant (VSHP) configured with converter-fed synchronous machine (CFSM). These machines are operated one extra degree of freedom that not usually optimized, where CFSM’s rotor-side DC excitation interacts stator-side AC excitation. Depending on loading, CFSM will be utilized in conditions far from its original design. In order to deal this issue, paper presents stator flux control (SFC) method regulating VSHPs more efficient way by adjusting field current prevent operating over-magnetization independent loading condition, well better utilizing stator-fed converter current. Also, reduces rotor losses and saturated iron. The derived first-principle analytical equations proposed SFC have been validated analyzed Matlab/Simulink environment large 45MVA, 375 rpm CFSM, measured saturation curve input. Finally, dynamic transitions between different levels pumping power reveal SFC’s ability help maintain unity machine, enabling optimal operation level.
