Stagnation detection meets fast mutation

Two mechanisms have recently been proposed that can significantly speed up finding distant improving solutions via mutation, namely using a random mutation rate drawn from heavy-tailed distribution (“fast mutation”, Doerr et al. (2017) [2]) and increasing the strength based on stagnation detection mechanism (Rajabi Witt (2020) [3]). Whereas latter obtain asymptotically best probability of single desired solution in given distance, former is more robust performs much better when many some distance exist. In this work, we propose strategy combines ideas both mechanisms. We show it also possible solution. However, several exist, outperform stagnation-detection approach fast mutation. The new operator than an interleaving two previous outperforms any such interleaving.
