Stable potassium (K) isotope characteristics at mid-ocean ridge hydrothermal vents and its implications for the global K cycle

چکیده
Recent discoveries of significant variations in stable K isotope ratios (41K/39K or ?41K) among various terrestrial samples indicate that isotopes can be a novel tracer for the global cycle, but key observation seawater ?41K is ?0.6‰ higher than bulk silicate Earth remains unexplained. An unconstrained component critical to this puzzle hydrothermal systems represent both major source and sink ocean. Here we report results on mid-ocean ridge (MOR) fluids from Gorda Ridge ?9°N East Pacific Rise (EPR), including time-series recorded perturbations fluid chemistry induced by local volcanic eruption. Fluid values range -0.46‰ -0.15‰, falling between those fresh basalts seawater. “time-zero” collected shortly after eruption are shifted towards value, followed return pre-eruption within ?2 years. largely influenced water–rock interactions, they cannot solely explained simple mixing leached at high temperatures. Instead, these data imply small fractionation enriches heavy basalts, likely caused low-temperature alteration during recharge stage circulation. Our preclude MOR as cause value Using constrained here systems, mass-balance model implies role marine sedimentary sink, possibly authigenic clay formation, cycle. Also, applying published ophiolites shows possibility significantly lower Ordovician, which enhanced reverse weathering response distinct climate tectonics time.

The Sound Generated by Mid-Ocean Ridge Black Smoker Hydrothermal Vents
Hydrothermal flow through seafloor black smoker vents is typically turbulent and vigorous, with speeds often exceeding 1 m/s. Although theory predicts that these flows will generate sound, the prevailing view has been that black smokers are essentially silent. Here we present the first unambiguous field recordings showing that these vents radiate significant acoustic energy. The sounds contain ...
متن کاملRapid hydrothermal cooling above the axial melt lens at fast-spreading mid-ocean ridge
Axial melt lenses sandwiched between the lower oceanic crust and the sheeted dike sequences at fast-spreading mid-ocean ridges are assumed to be the major magma source of oceanic crust accretion. According to the widely discussed "gabbro glacier" model, the formation of the lower oceanic crust requires efficient cooling of the axial melt lens, leading to partial crystallization and crystal-melt...
متن کاملDepth profiles of potassium and its isotope ratio (K/K) in several forest soils
Depth profiles potassium and its isotope ratio (K/K) were investigated in several forest soils from different geological and climatic backgrounds. The ratio was found not to be constant (0.0117 %) but varied appreciably from 0.0085 to 0.0167 % among different soils. Possible factors affecting variability of K/K values were considered by a multivariate factor analysis which suggested that aqueou...
متن کاملMitochondrial potassium transport: the K(+) cycle.
Potassium transport plays three distinct roles in mitochondria. Volume homeostasis to prevent excess matrix swelling is a housekeeping function that is essential for maintaining the structural integrity of the organelle. This function is mediated by the K(+)/H(+) antiporter and was first proposed by Peter Mitchell. Volume homeostasis to prevent excess matrix contraction is a recently discovered...
