Stabilizing CuO photocathode with a Cu3N protection shell
نویسندگان
چکیده
CuO, as a promising photocathode material, suffers from severe photocorrosion in photoelectrochemical water splitting applications. Herein, Cu3N protection shell was used to protect the CuO for first time effectively suppress of CuO. Consequently, Cu3N-protected shows improved stability, retaining 80% its initial current density 20-min test, while only 10% can be retained bare photocathode. This work may provide an important strategy using shells stabilize unstable photocathodes.

Synthesis of CuO and Cu3N Nanoparticles in and on Hollow Silica Spheres
Copper oxide nanoparticles within hollow mesoporous silica spheres were prepared by binding/adsorbing Cu2+ or [Cu(NH3)4(H2O)2]2+ ions on the surface of carbon spheres, followed by formation of a mesoporous silica shell by sol-gel processing and calcination in air. The CuO nanoparticles can subsequently be converted into Cu3N nanoparticles by nitridation with ammonia. The effect of the different...
متن کاملCu2O/CuO Bilayered Composite as a High-Efficiency Photocathode for Photoelectrochemical Hydrogen Evolution Reaction
Solar powered hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is one of the key reactions in solar-to-chemical energy conversion. It is desirable to develop photocathodic materials that exhibit high activity toward photoelectrochemical (PEC) HER at more positive potentials because a higher potential means a lower overpotential for HER. In this work, the Cu2O/CuO bilayered composites were prepared by a facile...
متن کاملA silicon-based photocathode for water reduction with an epitaxial SrTiO3 protection layer and a nanostructured catalyst
The rapidly increasing global demand for energy combined with the environmental impact of fossil fuels has spurred the search for alternative sources of clean energy. One promising approach is to convert solar energy into hydrogen fuel using photoelectrochemical cells. However, the semiconducting photoelectrodes used in these cells typically have low efficiencies and/or stabilities. Here we sho...

متن کاملPreparation and Instability of Nanocrystalline Cuprous Nitride.
Low-dimensional cuprous nitride (Cu3N) was synthesized by nitridation (ammonolysis) of cuprous oxide (Cu2O) nanocrystals using either ammonia (NH3) or urea (H2NCONH2) as the nitrogen source. The resulting nanocrystalline Cu3N spontaneously decomposes to nanocrystalline CuO in the presence of both water and oxygen from air at room temperature. Ammonia was produced in 60% chemical yield during Cu...
