Squaring within the Colless index yields a better balance index

چکیده

The Colless index for bifurcating phylogenetic trees, introduced by (1982), is defined as the sum, over all internal nodes v of tree, absolute value difference sizes clades children v. It one most popular balance indices, because, in addition to measuring a tree very simple and intuitive way, it turns out be powerful discriminating shape indices. But has some drawbacks. On hand, although its minimum reached at so-called maximally balanced almost always also trees that are not balanced. other definition sum values differences makes difficult study analytically distribution under probabilistic models trees. In this paper we show if replace clade squares these differences, drawbacks overcome resulting still more than original index.

A better index of body adiposity.

Obesity is a growing problem in the United States and throughout the world. It is a risk factor for many chronic diseases. The BMI has been used to assess body fat for almost 200 years. BMI is known to be of limited accuracy, and is different for males and females with similar %body adiposity. Here, we define an alternative parameter, the body adiposity index (BAI = ((hip circumference)/((heigh...

A new balance index for phylogenetic trees

Several indices that measure the degree of balance of a rooted phylogenetic tree have been proposed so far in the literature. In this work we define and study a new index of this kind, which we call the total cophenetic index: the sum, over all pairs of different leaves, of the depth of their lowest common ancestor. This index makes sense for arbitrary trees, can be computed in linear time and ...

A Step Forward for Better Interpreting the Apnea-Hypopnea Index.

1839 Editorial—Farre et al. Sir William Thomson, 1st Baron Kelvin, and one of the pillars in the history of physics and engineering wrote a few sentences that became a traditional citation: “ I often say that when you can measure what you are speaking about, and express it in numbers, you know something about it; but when you cannot measure it, when you cannot express it in numbers, your knowle...

The Summary Index of Malaria Surveillance (SIMS): a stable index of malaria within India

BACKGROUND Malaria in India has been difficult to measure. Mortality and morbidity are not comprehensively reported, impeding efforts to track changes in disease burden. However, a set of blood measures has been collected regularly by the National Malaria Control Program in most districts since 1958. METHODS Here, we use principal components analysis to combine these measures into a single in...

On Balance Index Sets of Rooted Trees

Any vertex labeling f : V → {0, 1} of the graph G = (V, E) induces a partial edge labeling f∗ : E → {0, 1} defined by f∗(uv) = f(u) if and only if f(u) = f(v). The balance index set of G is defined as {|f∗−1(0) − f∗−1(1)| : |f−1(0) − f−1(1)| ≤ 1}. In this paper, we first determine the balance index sets of rooted trees of height not exceeding two, thereby completely settling the problem for tre...
