Square-glyphs: assessing the readability of multidimensional spatial data visualized as square-glyphs

Glyphs have long been used to approach the challenge of visualising multidimensional data with geospatial reference. Depending on glyph design, data-dense visualizations several concurrent dimensions can be created. The square-glyph is a compound represent up four dimensions, e.g. walkability indices, reference gridded geographic space (Bleisch and Hollenstein 2018 [Exploring multivariate representations indices along linear features. Proceedings 2017 International Cartographic Conference, Washington D.C. (pp. 1–5)]). In this paper, we present user study evaluate readability interpretability square-glyphs. We compare performance plots containing two simultaneously mapped under different value compositions. Our results show that square-glyphs does not decrease as number represented increases from four. indicate no significant differences in efficiency effectiveness between four-dimensional two-dimensional average values five adjacent glyphs estimated mean error eight percentage points. suggest equal distances displayed are more accurately perceived lower-value composition than higher-value arrangements.
