Spitzer Reveals Hidden Quasar Nuclei in Some Powerful FR II Radio Galaxies
We present a Spitzer mid-infrared survey of 42 Fanaroff-Riley class II radio galaxies and quasars from the 3CRR catalog at redshift z < 1. All of the quasars and 45±12% of the narrow-line radio galaxies have a mid-IR luminosity of νLν(15μm) > 8 × 10 43 erg s, indicating strong thermal emission from hot dust in the active galactic nucleus. Our results demonstrate the power of Spitzer to unveil d...
متن کاملUnderstanding the nature of FR II optical nuclei: a new diagnostic plane for radio galaxies⋆
We extend our study of the nuclei of 3CR FR II radio galaxies through HST optical images up to z = 0.3. In the majority of them an unresolved nucleus (central compact core, CCC) is found. We analyze their position in the plane formed by the radio and optical nuclear luminosities in relation to their optical spectral properties. The broad–lined objects (BLO) have the brightest nuclei: they are p...
متن کاملThe dividing line between FR I and FR II radio–galaxies
In the radio – host galaxy optical luminosity plane FR I and FR II radio–galaxies are clearly divided. Since the optical luminosity of an elliptical galaxy is an indication of the mass of its central black hole, we propose that the FR I–FR II dividing luminosity is a function of the mass of the black hole powering the active nucleus. Furthermore, as the radio power gives an estimate of the tota...
متن کاملJet/environment Interactions of Fr-i and Fr-ii Radio Galaxies
We present the results of new XMM observations of FR-I and FR-II radio galaxies that show the importance of jet/environment interactions for both radiosource structure and the properties of the surrounding gas. The FR-I observations reveal that the distribution of hot gas determines the radio-lobe morphology, and provide evidence that the subsonic expansion of the lobes heats the surrounding ga...
متن کاملOn the nature of optical nuclei in FR I radio - galaxies from ACS / HST imaging polarimetry ⋆
We obtained optical imaging polarimetry with the ACS/HRC aboard the HST of the 9 closest radiogalaxies in the 3C catalogue with an FR I morphology. The nuclear sources seen in direct HST images in these galaxies are found to be highly polarized with levels in the range ∼ 2 11 % with a median value of 7 %. We discuss the different mechanisms that produce polarized emission and conclude that the ...
