Counterclockwise Magnetic Fields in the Norma Spiral Arm
Pulsars provide unique probes of the large-scale interstellar magnetic field in the Galactic disk. Up to now, the limited Galactic distribution of the known pulsar population has restricted these investigations to within a few kiloparsec of the Sun. The Parkes multibeam pulsar survey has discovered many more-distant pulsars which enables us for the first time to explore the magnetic field in mo...
متن کاملKinematics of Spiral-arm Streaming in M51
We use CO and H velocity fields to study the gas kinematics in the spiral arms and interarms of M51 (NGC 5194), and fit the 2D velocity field to estimate the radial and tangential velocity components as a function of spiral phase (arm distance). We find large radial and tangential streaming velocities, which are qualitatively consistentwith the predictions of density wave theory and support the ...
متن کاملAbsolute versus convective instability of spiral waves
Absolute and convective instabilities of spirals are investigated using the continuous and the so-called absolute spectrum. It is shown that the nature of transport, induced by an absolute instability, is determined by spectral data of the asymptotic wave trains. The results are applied to core and far-field breakup of spiral waves in excitable and oscillatory media.
متن کاملCepheids as tracers of star formation in M31 II. NGC 206: evidence for spiral arm interactions
NGC 206 in the Andromeda Galaxy (M 31) is the largest and perhaps the most massive region in the Local Group with coherent star formation taking place on a timescale of∼30 Myr.We have incorporated observations of the Hi emission and blue stars with our new identifications of Cepheid variables and those from observations by Baade and collaborators to study the star formation history in this regi...
متن کاملSpiral Structure as a Recurrent Instability
A long-standing controversy in studies of spiral structure has concerned the lifetimes of individual spiral patterns. Much theoretical work has sought quasi-stationary spiral modes while N -body simulations have consistently displayed recurrent, short-lived patterns. The simulations manifest a recurrent cycle of true instabilities related to small-scale features in the angular momentum distribu...
