Spectral evidence for alkaline rocks and compositional diversity among feldspathic light-toned terrains on Mars

چکیده
Previously reported plagioclase detections in the near-IR (NIR) are associated with crater-exposed subsurface materials as well light-toned bedrock plains poor crater retention. Because Fe-bearing has a weak ~1.25 μm feature that can be easily obscured by stronger absorptions most pyroxenes and olivines, candidate lithologies must dominated (e.g., anorthosite) and/or spectrally neutral quartz, K-spar, some volcanic glasses, Fe2+−poor pyroxenes). To further understand NIR detections, we investigated spectral nature of these THEMIS CRISM data, focused on six exposures Nili Patera caldera Terra Sabaea (~20–25°S, ~40–47°E). Thermal infrared data from discriminate between lithologies; however, it lower spatial resolution (100 m/pix) than (18 thus increasing likelihood subpixel mixing rock sand. We forward modeled range mixtures mafic sands alkaline subalkaline spanning total alkali-silica diagram to identify suite compositions could plausibly fit observations. In Patera, feldspathic likely consist plagioclase-dominated composition silica content below ~60 wt%. However, at least one location Sabaea, significant alkali feldspar (trachyandesitic trachytic) contents up ~60–65% inferred contain straddle boundary intermediate-to-felsic highly silicic or quartz-bearing rhyolites, granite, dacites) not locations studied. Last, results indicate NIR-based differing lithologies.

Light-toned layered deposits in Juventae Chasma, Mars
We examine hypotheses for the formation of light-toned layered deposits in Juventae Chasma using a combination of data from Mars Global Surveyor’s Mars Orbiter Camera (MOC), Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA), and Thermal Emission Spectrometer (TES), as well as Mars Odyssey’s Thermal Emission Imaging System (THEMIS). We divide Juventae Chasma into geomorphic units of (i) chasm wall rock, (ii) ...

متن کاملOrbital evidence for more widespread carbonate-bearing rocks on Mars
Carbonates are key minerals for understanding ancient Martian environments because they are indicators of potentially habitable, neutral-to-alkaline water and may be an important reservoir for paleoatmospheric CO2. Previous remote sensing studies have identified mostly Mg-rich carbonates, both in Martian dust and in a Late Noachian rock unit circumferential to the Isidis basin. Here we report e...
متن کاملAGeochemical Classification for Feldspathic Igneous Rocks
In this paper we classify the range of feldspathic igneous rocks using five geochemical variables: the FeO/(FeOþMgO) ratio or Fe-index, the modified alkali^lime index, the aluminum-saturation index, the alkalinity index, and the feldspathoid silica-saturation index. The Fe-index distinguishes between melts that have undergone extensive iron enrichment during differentiation from those that have ...
متن کاملMars: Fretted and Chaotic Terrains
Fretted and chaotic terrains are members of a larger family of lowland terrains on the Martian surface. They have formed in equatorial and midnorthern latitudes, within areas reasonably proximate to the extensive volcanic fields of that region. Both are relatively recent developments. Fretted terrain is characterized by extensive, smooth, lowland plains separated from the old cratered upland by...
