Specific microbiome signatures under the canopy of Mediterranean shrubs

چکیده
Shrub encroachment (SE) is a phenomenon in which grasses and herbaceous vegetation are replaced by woody shrubs. Many previous studies have highlighted the effects of SE on soil respiration rates nutrient storage, but little known about impacts microbiota. While work considered shrubs to be non-species specific or as single intervening species, we selected an Ampelodemsos mauritanicus grassland six coexisting (i.e. Pistacia lentiscus L., Juniperus phoenicea Myrtus communis Rosmarinus officinalis Olea europaea Euphorbia dendroides L.) investigate their We used high-throughput sequencing, coupled with chemical analyses litter using 13C CPMAS NMR spectroscopy. Results showed strong influence shrub species bacterial fungal community diversity, richness overall composition soil. Litter chemistry was dominated O-alkyl-C, highest content Ampelodesmos E. dendroides, richer aromatic C P. R. officinalis. Bacterial diversity under J. while lowest grassland. Conversely, O. M. Moreover, N contents were europaea, compared other species. In addition, had Fe content. Structural equation model (SEM) analysis ascertained that shifts closely related changes properties. Our results suggest individual effect each matrix depends mainly properties litter, alters profile and, cascade, shapes associated

Canopy vs. soil effects of shrubs facilitating tree seedlings in Mediterranean montane ecosystems
Question: Is the facilitative effect of nurse shrubs on early recruitment of trees mediated by a ‘canopy effect’ (microclimate amelioration and protection from herbivores), a ‘soil effect’ (modification of soil properties), or both? Location: Two successional montane shrublands at the Sierra Nevada Protected Area, SE Spain. Method: Seedlings of Quercus and Pinus species were planted in four exp...
متن کاملContrasting water strategies of two Mediterranean shrubs of limited distribution: uncertain future under a drier climate.
Plants have evolved different strategies to cope with drought, involving alternative ecophysiologies and different levels of plasticity. These strategies are critical for species of limited distribution, which are especially vulnerable to the current rates of rapid environmental change. The aim of this study was to assess the water strategy of two species with limited distribution, Cneorum tric...
متن کاملSpecies-specific signatures of the microbiome from Camponotus and Colobopsis ants across developmental stages
Symbiotic relationships between hosts and bacteria are common in nature, and these may be responsible for the evolutionary success of various groups of animals. Among ants, these associations have been well studied in some genera of the Camponotini, but several questions remain regarding the generality of the previous findings across all the members of this ant tribe and if bacterial communitie...
متن کاملCorrection: Deep Sequencing Identifies Ethnicity-Specific Bacterial Signatures in the Oral Microbiome
Oral infections have a strong ethnic predilection; suggesting that ethnicity is a critical determinant of oral microbial colonization. Dental plaque and saliva samples from 192 subjects belonging to four major ethnicities in the United States were analyzed using terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (t-RFLP) and 16S pyrosequencing. Ethnicity-specific clustering of microbial communit...
