Distributed Fiber Optic Sensing for Homeland Security
Public reporting burden for the collection of information is estimated to average 1 hour per response, including the time for reviewing instructions, searching existing data sources, gathering and maintaining the data needed, and completing and reviewing the collection of information. Send comments regarding this burden estimate or any other aspect of this collection of information, including s...
متن کاملFiber - Optic Sensing of Linear Thermal Expansion (RESEARCH NOTES)
The use of a LED fiber-optic sensor to measure displacement and linear thermal expansion is described. It has a sensitivity of about 0.6 mV/mm, a resolution of 1.25 mm, and a dynamic rang of 400 mm for displacement measurements. For thermal expansion, it shows a sensitivity of about 3.5 mV/C, and the experimental linear expansion values are in agreement with those calculated. The reported senso...
متن کاملFiber-Optic Sensing Technologies
The fiber optics and optoelectronics industry has experienced a tremendous amount of innovation over the past four decades. Initially conceived for medical endoscopic applications, optical fibers were considered in the mid-1960s as an adequate technology for telecommunications applications. Since then, light wave communications systems have become the preferred and standard method to transmit v...
متن کاملFiber optic distributed temperature sensing for the determination of air temperature
This paper describes a method to correct for the effect of solar radiation in atmospheric distributed temperature sensing (DTS) applications. By using two cables with different diameters, one can determine what temperature a zero diameter cable would have. Such a virtual cable would not be affected by solar heating and would take on the temperature of the surrounding air. With two unshielded ca...
متن کاملPAPER Special Issue on Optical Fiber Sensors
distributed sensings on temperature and strain have been extensively investigated based on Raman [1] and Brillouin [2] scattering methods, respectively. During the course of our developments on a new sensor which can work as one of sensing elements for multi-point detection using a Rayleighscattering based OTDR through an optical fiber network, a hetero-core fiber optic sensor was exploratively...
