Spatiotemporal variability of dissolved inorganic macronutrients along the northern Antarctic Peninsula (1996–2019)

چکیده

Abstract The northern Antarctic Peninsula is a key region of the Southern Ocean due to its complex ocean dynamics, distinct water mass sources, and climate‐driven changes taking place in region. Despite importance macronutrients supporting strong biological carbon uptake storage, little known about their spatiotemporal variability along Peninsula. Hence, we explored for first time 24‐year series (1996–2019) this understand processes involved spatial interannual macronutrients. We found high macronutrient concentrations, even surface waters during phytoplankton blooms. Minimum concentrations dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN; 16 μ mol kg −1 ), phosphate (0.7 silicic acid (40 ) are higher than those recorded surrounding regions. main source intrusions Circumpolar Deep Water modified variety, while local sources (organic matter remineralization, mixing, mesoscale structures) can enhance variability. However, identified depletion influence Dense Shelf from Weddell Sea. Macronutrient show substantial driven by balance between advection Water, which largely modulated Annular Mode (SAM) some extent El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO). These findings critical improving our understanding natural ecosystem how it responding climate changes.

Temporal and Regional Variability in the Skin Microbiome of Humpback Whales along the Western Antarctic Peninsula

The skin is the first line of defense between an animal and its environment, and disruptions in skin-associated microorganisms can be linked to an animal's health and nutritional state. To better understand the skin microbiome of large whales, high-throughput sequencing of partial small subunit rRNA genes was used to study the skin-associated bacteria of 89 seemingly healthy humpback whales (Me...

Microzooplankton community composition along the Western Antarctic Peninsula

Microzooplankton are an integral part of aquatic food webs, yet compared to macrozooplankton, are understudied in the Southern Ocean. The region along the Western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) is experiencing rapid climate warming, resulting in declines in sea ice extent and duration, and affecting the marine food web. Microzooplankton community structure along the WAP was analyzed in January 2010 ...

ENSO and variability of the Antarctic Peninsula pelagic marine ecosystem

The West Antarctic Peninsula region is an important source of Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) in the Southern Ocean. From 1980–2004 abundance and concentration of phytoplankton and zooplankton, krill reproductive and recruitment success and seasonal sea ice extent here were significantly correlated with the atmospheric Southern Oscillation Index and exhibited threeto five-year frequencies c...

Western Antarctic Peninsula physical oceanography and spatio–temporal variability

Peninsula (WAP). The dataset offers the most long-lived consistent CTD-gridded observations of Antarctic waters collected anywhere in the Southern Ocean. The physical characteristics, water column structure and spatio–temporal variability of the various properties are examined for physically consistent and ecologically important patterns and modes of variability. Unique findings of note include...

Diet of a specialist in a changing environment: the crabeater seal along the western Antarctic Peninsula

Although crabeater seals Lobodon carcinophaga are among the most abundant consumers of Antarctic krill Euphausia superba, their diet has rarely been studied throughout most of the species’ range. Using δ13C and δ15N values in vibrissae from 53 seals, we examined the trophic ecology of crabeater seals from the western Antarctic Peninsula (wAP) in 2001, 2002 and 2007. We observed a wide variabili...
