Spatially resolved GHz magnetization dynamics of a magnetite nano-particle chain inside a magnetotactic bacterium

چکیده

Understanding magnonic properties of nonperiodic magnetic nanostructures requires real-space imaging ferromagnetic resonance modes with spatial resolution well below the optical diffraction limit and sampling rates in 5--100 GHz range. Here, we demonstrate element-specific scanning transmission x-ray microscopy-detected (STXM-FMR) applied to a chain dipolarly coupled ${\mathrm{Fe}}_{3}{\mathrm{O}}_{4}$ nano-particles (40--50 nm particle size) inside single cell magnetotactic bacterium Magnetospirillum magnetotacticum. The mode nano-particle driven at 6.748 probed 50 focus size was found have uniform phase response but non-uniform amplitude along segments due superposition dipolar individual particles, agreement micromagnetic simulations.

Elongated magnetite nanoparticle formation from a solid ferrous precursor in a magnetotactic bacterium

Magnetotactic bacteria are aquatic microorganisms that intracellularly mineralize ferrimagnetic nanoparticles enabling the cells to align with the geomagnetic field. The bacteria produce a magnetic mineral of species-specific phase (magnetite Fe(II)Fe(III)2O4 or greigite Fe(II)Fe(III)2S4), size, morphology and particle assembly. Several species produce crystals of unusual elongated particle sha...

Magnetite in freshwater magnetotactic bacteria.

A previously undescribed magnetotactic spirillum isolated from a freshwater swamp was mass cultured in the magnetic as well as the nonmagnetic state in chemically defined culture media. Results of Mossbauer spectroscopic analysis applied to whole cells identifies magnetite as a constituent of these magnetic bacteria.

The chemical formula of a magnetotactic bacterium.

Elucidation of the chemical logic of life is one of the grand challenges in biology, and essential to the progress of the upcoming field of synthetic biology. Treatment of microbial cells explicitly as a "chemical" species in controlled reaction (growth) environments has allowed fascinating discoveries of elemental formulae of a few species that have guided the modern views on compositions of a...

Iron reductase for magnetite synthesis in the magnetotactic bacterium Magnetospirillum magnetotacticum.

Ferric iron reductase was purified from magnetotactic bacterium Magnetospirillum (formerly Aquaspirillum) magnetotacticum (ATCC 31632) to an electrophoretically homogeneous state. The enzyme was loosely bound on the cytoplasmic face of the cytoplasmic membrane and was found more frequently in magnetic cells than in nonmagnetic cells. The molecular mass of the purified enzyme was calculated upon...
