Spatial Heterogeneity in Prey Availability, Feeding Success, and Dietary Selectivity for the Threatened Longfin Smelt

چکیده

Abstract Food availability is a key determinant of the nursery value given habitat for larval and juvenile fishes. Growth, survival, recruitment success are often inter-correlated influenced by prey associated feeding success. This likely true threatened population Longfin Smelt ( Spirinchus thaleichthys ) in San Francisco Estuary (SFE) which has collapsed recent decades along with its preferred prey. In years high precipitation freshwater outflow, found shallow wetland habitats throughout SFE, but variation food these remains unexplored. To examine spatial trophic different rearing habitats, we quantified availability, success, selection captured restored tidal marshes, sloughs, open-water northern southern SFE. Prey abundance varied spatially, densities approximately tenfold greater sloughs ponds relative to habitats. Feeding was positively correlated both fish length density. Larval fed selectively on copepod Eurytemora affinis , larger individuals (> 25 mm total length) exhibiting an ontogenetic diet shift mysid shrimps. Our results suggest that across SFE vary greatly their value, previously unexplored highest foraging Smelt.

the search for the self in becketts theatre: waiting for godot and endgame

this thesis is based upon the works of samuel beckett. one of the greatest writers of contemporary literature. here, i have tried to focus on one of the main themes in becketts works: the search for the real "me" or the real self, which is not only a problem to be solved for beckett man but also for each of us. i have tried to show becketts techniques in approaching this unattainable goal, base...

heterogeneity within the orientalist discourse: representation of the orient in womens travelogues and mens paintings

from 1950s onward, new theories and critical approaches burgeoned across humanities. these theories were context-oriented; as a result, the analysis of discursive practices gained significance. thus, social, political, historical and cultural discourses that have been hitherto marginalized and considered inferior to literary texts, were introduced as important texts to be analyzed by critics. o...

Assessing nursery habitat quality for native smelts (Osmeridae) in the low-salinity zone of the San Francisco estuary

Habitat quality was assessed for two native osmerids, delta smelt Hypomesus transpacificus and longfin smelt Spirinchus thaleichthys, between two distinct nursery areas located in the lowsalinity zone of the San Francisco estuary. The relationship between several variables was investigated including fish density, fish size, feeding success and the general condition of larvae as well as juvenile...

Population Dynamics and Distribution Patterns of Longfin Smelt in the San Francisco Estuary

—The San Francisco Estuary supports several endemic species of fish and the southernmost populations of other species. Many of these native species and populations are imperiled or have experienced recent population declines that indicate a general decline in the estuary’s capacity to support pelagic fish species. We studied the distribution and abundance of one of the estuary’s native species,...
